Mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression significantly impede daily functioning, prompting ongoing efforts within the scientific community to discover dietary and lifestyle modifications that may alleviate these issues.
Research published in EMBO Molecular Medicine has indicated that the intake of probiotic-rich foods, such as yoghurt and kimchi, may help diminish anxiety-related behaviours.
Gut health's influence on anxiety

The research revealed that specific molecules called indoles, which are produced by gut microbiota, play a role in anxiety management. There exists a significant relationship between emotional well-being and optimal gut health. An imbalance in gut bacteria can exacerbate anxiety-related behaviours, thus highlighting the benefits of consuming foods rich in probiotics.
To explore the relationship between gut microbiota and anxiety, the researchers performed experiments on mice. Their results indicate that gut health has a direct impact on brain function and mood-related behaviours linked to anxiety and depression.
This study reinforces the established notion of the ‘gut-brain axis,’ underscoring the importance of gut health in regulating mood.
Probiotics beneficial for mental well-being
Probiotics are live microorganisms that contribute to the equilibrium of gut microbiota. Foods such as yoghurt, kefir, kimchi, sauerkraut, and kombucha are rich in these beneficial bacteria.
This finding is significant, as the intake of probiotics can help restore gut health balance, thereby reducing anxiety-related behaviours. It presents a more accessible approach to addressing and improving mood-related issues.
