Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) is increasingly recognized as a major global health issue, largely attributed to rising obesity rates, diabetes prevalence, and sedentary lifestyles. NAFLD encompasses a range of liver conditions, from simple hepatic steatosis, characterized by fat accumulation in the liver, to its more advanced form, non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), which can progress to fibrosis, cirrhosis, and potentially liver failure.
Silent liver killer
Often referred to as a silent liver killer, recent research indicates that NAFLD impacts around 25 percent of the worldwide population, with its prevalence escalating, particularly among younger demographics due to the obesity crisis. In a discussion with HT Lifestyle, Dr. Sumeet Kainth, MBBS, MD (General Medicine), DM (Hepatology), a Consultant in Hepatology and Gastroenterology at Livasa Hospital in Mohali and Khanna, noted, “Factors such as genetic susceptibility, unhealthy dietary habits, and insufficient physical activity play a crucial role in the advancement of this disease.”

Tips to protect yourself from fatty liver
The phrase "Caring for Your Liver, caring for You" underscores the importance of lifestyle changes as the fundamental approach to managing liver health. Dr. Sumeet Kainth stated, "Achieving weight loss through dietary changes and consistent physical activity has been demonstrated to decrease liver fat and enhance liver function. The Mediterranean diet, which is abundant in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats, is highly recommended."
He further noted that regular physical activity, especially aerobic exercises, has been shown to effectively reduce hepatic fat levels. Dr. Sumeet Kainth also mentioned, "New treatment options are emerging, including investigational medications that target metabolic pathways, inflammation, and fibrosis. Timely detection and intervention are crucial to halt the progression of liver disease."

He concluded, “Regular screening for high-risk individuals, such as those with obesity or Type 2 diabetes, is crucial. A combination of lifestyle changes and future targeted therapies may provide a comprehensive approach to managing NAFLD effectively.”
