A recent study conducted by Patrick Solverson at Washington State University suggests that an often-overlooked berry may provide solutions to three significant issues: blood sugar regulation, body fat management, and gut health enhancement.
The research indicates that elderberries can assist in stabilizing blood sugar levels, facilitate healthy fat metabolism, and promote a balanced gut microbiome. Findings of the study:
The research involved 18 overweight participants, all of whom were otherwise healthy and reported no serious medical issues. The majority of participants were women aged around 40, with an average BMI of 29.12. They consumed elderberry juice for one week, followed by a three-week washout period to eliminate any residual effects, after which they ingested a placebo beverage that resembled elderberry juice but lacked active ingredients.

The findings demonstrated that after one week of elderberry juice consumption, participants exhibited improved blood sugar levels, even after consuming a high-carbohydrate meal. Additionally, they showed enhanced fat burning both at rest and during physical activity. Patrick Solverson, an assistant professor in the Department of Nutrition and Exercise Physiology at WSU, remarked in a statement, "Elderberry is a berry that has not received the recognition it deserves, both in commercial and nutritional contexts. We are beginning to acknowledge its significance for human health, and the findings are quite promising. The concept of food as medicine is gaining traction, and scientific research is aligning with this widely held belief. This study adds to the expanding evidence that elderberry, a traditional folk remedy for centuries, offers various advantages for metabolic and prebiotic health."
