Chronic diseases are defined as long-term health conditions that can lead to various complications for the patient over time. Cancer, which has a notable recovery rate, can also be classified as a chronic disease; however, the question arises: can cancer itself contribute to the development of other chronic illnesses?
In a discussion with HT Lifestyle, Dr. Aditi Chaturvedi, principal consultant in oncology at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Saket, elaborated on chronic diseases. She stated, “The most prevalent chronic diseases include heart disease, hypertension, lung disease, arthritis, and high blood pressure, many of which are linked to lifestyle choices. These conditions often stem from insufficient physical activity, excessive consumption of high-calorie and processed foods, as well as smoking and alcohol use. With the progress made in cancer treatment, cancer is frequently regarded as a chronic disease, as patients can live for extended periods with the condition, necessitating long-term lifestyle modifications and ongoing medical attention. There exists a noteworthy relationship between chronic diseases and cancer.
Are cancer and chronic diseases correlated?
In response to this inquiry, Dr. Aditi Chaturvedi stated, “Approximately one-third of cancer risk is linked to the presence of comorbid or chronic conditions, while nearly one-fifth of cancer cases can be attributed to various chronic diseases, including heart disease and diabetes. Engaging in physical activity is correlated with a reduction of nearly 40% in cancer risk associated with these chronic conditions.”
The doctor further emphasized that lifestyle choices can contribute to the development of cancers. “The most prevalent cancers related to lifestyle factors include those associated with alcohol consumption, smoking, and obesity. Specifically, these include cancers of the esophagus, colon, large intestine, as well as breast and uterine cancers in women,” the oncologist noted.

There exists an urgent necessity to inform the public that effectively managing metabolic and lifestyle-related diseases can safeguard individuals not only from these conditions and their negative consequences but also from the occurrence and mortality associated with cancer, the doctor emphasized.
