Tender coconut water can serve as a nutritious component of a balanced diet when consumed in moderation. However, in a recent Instagram video, Dr. Jamal A. Khan, MBBS, MD (medical microbiology) and cancer immunotherapist, cautioned individuals, particularly the elderly, to limit their intake due to its high potassium content.

Coconut water should be consumed less

This clear liquid found within coconuts can lead to excessive potassium levels in the body, potentially impairing heart function, according to Dr. Khan.

He stated, “Coconut water should be consumed less frequently, especially by older adults. Its high potassium content can adversely affect cardiac functions. We advise our patients that coconut water is not beneficial for their health. If you are exposed to the sun or sweating, a small amount of coconut water is sufficient; it should not be incorporated into your daily regimen.”

What you need to know about coconut water

Essential information regarding coconut water indicates that it is abundant in carbohydrates and electrolytes, including potassium, sodium, and magnesium. Due to these electrolytes, there is considerable interest in utilizing coconut water for the treatment and prevention of dehydration.

According to WebMD, individuals with elevated potassium levels in their blood should avoid coconut water. Typically, excess potassium is eliminated through urine; however, this process may be compromised if kidney function is impaired. Those with kidney issues should consult their healthcare provider prior to consuming coconut water.

Additionally, WebMD notes that coconut water may affect blood pressure and blood sugar regulation during and after surgical procedures. It is advisable to discontinue coconut water consumption at least two weeks prior to any scheduled surgery. Furthermore, coconut water may interact with certain medications, so it is prudent to consult a healthcare provider to determine the appropriate type and dosage of coconut water for specific health conditions.
