Cardiovascular disease remains a primary cause of mortality worldwide, with heart blockages frequently being a significant contributing factor. Alarmingly, numerous individuals are unaware of their blockages until they experience a severe cardiac incident.

In the April 1 episode of Raj Shamani's podcast, renowned cardiac surgeon Dr. Ramakanta Panda provides essential information regarding the key symptoms of heart blockage that everyone ought to recognize.

Common symptoms of heart blockage

When Raj inquired about how to determine if someone has a heart blockage, Dr. Panda clarified, "While not everyone exhibits symptoms, most individuals do. Typically, these symptoms do not manifest when a person is at rest, such as during sitting, conversing, or engaging in minimal physical activity. Even in cases of significant blockage, the heart's demand for blood while at rest is low, and the available supply is usually sufficient. Consequently, many individuals may not notice any unusual sensations while at rest, even if they have serious blockages."

He underscored that indications of heart issues often manifest during stressful situations, whether from physical activity or emotional pressure. "If you suddenly experience a sensation of heaviness or pain on the left side of your chest, akin to pressure or the feeling of a heavy weight pressing down, or if you begin to feel breathless or have a choking sensation, and these symptoms diminish when you cease the activity or rest, it is a significant warning sign of a heart-related problem. This condition is referred to as angina, which is a typical symptom of heart blockage."

When to seek medical attention

Dr. Panda emphasized that symptoms do not always conform to typical presentations. Often, individuals may experience chest pain that does not feel as though it originates from the heart. "Many people experience what we refer to as atypical chest pain. They might visit a dentist, believing it to be a dental issue, or seek help from a gastroenterologist, thinking it is related to acidity or a stomach problem. However, when their test results return normal yet they continue to feel discomfort, it becomes essential to assess the heart," he explains.

His primary message is that heart conditions can manifest subtly and may be misdiagnosed, making it vital to pay attention to recurring or unexplained symptoms, even if they initially appear unrelated to cardiac issues.
