A study published in the Journal of Applied Psychology revealed the mental repercussions of overhearing political conversations in the workplace. The study examined 263 full-time employees to understand these effects. Overhearing political conversations was found to be emotionally distressing, heightening negative emotions like frustration and stress. Frustration spikes especially when it comes to contradictory political opinions. While the study didn’t find a strong correlation with cognitive depletion. It means it does not interfere with concentration. Employees felt emotionally drained, though their ability to focus wasn’t significantly impacted.
Although, the emotional toll was evident. The stress would be overwhelming and the employees would be unable to meet their work targets, which may further add to the feeling of anxiety and eventually job satisfaction.
Role of co-worker similarity
An intriguing element of the study is the role of co-worker similarity. When employees share similar traits, values, and beliefs with their co-workers, they are less likely to be negatively affected by overhearing opposing political opinions. They understand the rationale behind their political opinions. This sense of similarity creates a safe space for understanding, even when political beliefs differ.
