Every day, our bodies face a range of challenges, from work stress and pollution to unhealthy lifestyle choices like junk food and insufficient sleep. To tackle these issues, it's crucial to maintain a robust immune system.

In a chat with a Lifestyle Magazine, Dr. Rini Vohra Shrivastava, a Scientific Advisor at Maharishi Ayurveda, noted, “Ayurveda, a 5,000-year-old wellness system from India that has caught the attention of global health experts, teaches us that immunity goes beyond just fighting off infections. It’s about achieving balance among the body, mind, and lifestyle.”

She further explained, “A healthy gut is key to better health, sustained energy, and overall wellness. Ayurveda highlights the need to nurture your Ojas (vital energy) and keep your Agni (digestive fire) strong, both of which are vital for optimal body function and enhancing immunity.”

A well-functioning digestive system is essential for strong immunity. Dr. Rini Vohra Shrivastava added, “Proper nutrition acts as medicine, detoxification helps eliminate toxins, and balanced digestion boosts vitality—making Ayurveda a comprehensive approach to strengthening the body’s natural defenses.”

She also shared five Ayurvedic tips to boost immunity that you can easily add to your daily routine:

1. Stay hydrated by sipping on warm or hot water, along with detox teas

Staying hydrated is essential for detoxing and keeping your digestive system in check, both of which are key for a robust immune system. Starting your day with warm water mixed with lemon and honey can help eliminate toxins and kickstart your digestive fire. Herbal teas, like a mix of cumin, coriander, and fennel (known as CCF tea), are great for digestion and detoxing, helping to reduce bloating and keep your digestive fire burning strong. Plus, drinking lemon-honey water is a fantastic way to flush out toxins and boost your energy levels.

Green tea helps boost immunity and detoxify the body too.

2. Add spices that boost immunity to your dishes

Ayurveda emphasizes the value of adding certain spices to your everyday meals to enhance digestion and assist with detoxification. Spices like turmeric, black pepper, ginger, and cinnamon can naturally boost your immune system. These spices are known for their anti-inflammatory benefits, which help the body’s detox processes. They also stimulate appetite and promote digestive health, particularly after rich meals. Incorporating them into your daily dishes—like soups, stews, or warm milk—can enhance metabolism and strengthen your body’s defenses.

Make use of spices and herbs to build your immunity.

3. Enjoy foods that are in season and served warm

Ayurveda suggests that foods that quickly convert into ojas are beneficial for boosting immunity, while those that create ama are detrimental. Cooking food makes it easier to digest, but if you overcook it, you might lose valuable nutrients, which can lessen its immune-boosting properties. Ideally, the food should be soft and easy to chew. Dishes like khichdi, soups, and stews are great for providing warmth and nourishment, especially in the colder months. It's best to steer clear of processed, stale, and cold foods, and instead focus on warm, freshly prepared meals to enhance digestion, which in turn helps maintain a healthy gut and supports immunity.

4. Boost your gut health with buttermilk and some herbs

A healthy gut is key to a strong immune system. Chaach or Chaas (buttermilk) is a light and easy-to-digest drink that calms the stomach and helps with detox. Having buttermilk after lunch can improve digestion, ease bloating, and restore good bacteria in your gut. It's a simple addition to your meals that can really help with digestive issues, especially after indulging in heavy festival foods or dining out. On the other hand, taking Triphala at night supports detoxification. Both Triphala and Triphala Rose are known for their gentle yet effective cleansing abilities. Ayurveda also suggests using Rasayanas and rejuvenating formulas to boost immunity, increase energy, and offer long-lasting protection against seasonal illnesses.

5. Embrace restorative approaches

Ayurveda emphasizes the strong link between mental health and immunity. Along with a healthy diet, practices like Yoga, pranayama (yogic breathing), and Transcendental meditation help manage stress hormones and balance the doshas. Getting enough sleep, eating mindfully, and staying active all contribute to strengthening immunity by maintaining overall physical and mental harmony.

Researchers suggest there could be significant improvement in symptoms of depression and anxiety in medicated patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) who participate in breathing technique known as Sudarshan Kriya yoga.

Dr. Rini Vohra Shrivastava stated, “Ayurveda provides a timeless and comprehensive way to boost immunity by fostering a delicate equilibrium among the body, mind, and lifestyle. This ancient practice goes beyond merely preventing infections; it highlights the significance of enhancing vitality and aiding digestion, which contributes to strong immunity and a balanced state of overall wellness. It’s a journey toward vibrant health, grounded in balance and conscious living.”
