CrossFit is a fitness program that effectively integrates strength training with aerobic exercise, addressing the workout requirements of individuals across various fitness levels. While often perceived as a discipline suited for elite athletes, the intensity of the workouts can be adjusted to accommodate both seasoned practitioners and beginners. Engaging in CrossFit contributes to improved cardiovascular health, increased muscle strength, and enhanced functional fitness.
Furthermore, a recent study conducted by Athalie Redwood-Brown and Jen Wilson from Nottingham Trent University suggests that CrossFit may serve as a viable alternative to prescription medications for managing chronic and long-term health conditions. This workout regimen could potentially provide a healthier option compared to conventional treatments, offering a range of health benefits.
Findings of the study:
Study findings indicate that the research involved 1,211 participants from the UK, aged between 19 and 67, who practiced CrossFit. Participants were surveyed regarding their health issues and the prescription medications they were using prior to commencing CrossFit. It was found that 280 individuals were on at least one prescription drug, with prevalent health concerns including anxiety, depression, asthma, hypertension, Type 2 diabetes, and chronic pain.
Post-implementation of CrossFit, 54% of those who had been on prescription medications reported a reduction in their dosages. Among these, 69 individuals completely ceased their medication, while 82 reduced their dosage by 50%. Additionally, 40% of participants noted a decrease in the frequency of their doctor visits after initiating this fitness program.
Why CrossFit is beneficial?
Although the research does not explicitly address the health advantages of CrossFit, the effects of consistent physical activity on overall health are considerable. CrossFit contributes to better metabolic health and cardiovascular fitness, which may assist in the management of chronic illnesses. Additionally, CrossFit is typically performed in a communal environment, such as a gym, which can cultivate a sense of belonging and positively influence mental well-being. Furthermore, CrossFit enhances muscle strength and endurance, potentially alleviating joint pain and reducing pressure on the joints.
