Additionally, stress often leads to forgetfulness, increasing the risk of mistakenly taking an excessive amount of medication or incorrect dosages, which may trigger a hypoglycemic episode. Such occurrences can have serious repercussions.”

He stated that heightened stress levels are linked to the consumption of detrimental substances, including alcohol, nicotine, and cannabis, which can exacerbate an individual's diabetes and elevate the risk of complications. Furthermore, the onset of significant psychiatric conditions related to stress, such as anxiety disorders or major depressive disorders, may negatively impact the long-term outlook of patients. Moreover, stress combined with inadequate glycemic control represents a significant co-morbidity in the emergence of sexual disorders, including erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation, and diminished sexual desire. This situation can frequently lead to considerable interpersonal conflict.

Proven ways to manage stress and stabilise blood sugar

Dr Kedar Tilwe has proposed several strategies for managing stress that may also contribute to better blood sugar control. 

Engaging in mindfulness practices, including exercises that utilize the five senses, meditation, and various breathing techniques, can significantly alleviate stress by promoting a focus on the present moment. Additionally, the practice of mindful eating can mitigate the impulsivity often linked to binge eating, thereby aiding in the regulation of blood sugar levels. 

Research indicates that the administration of antidepressants for individuals suffering from major depression or anxiety disorders is correlated with improved glycemic control, as evidenced by enhancements in HbA1C levels. 

Furthermore, seeking assistance from a mental health professional to address substance use disorders, whether through medication or therapeutic approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) or Motivational Enhancement Therapy, can also facilitate better sugar regulation. 

Incorporating regular practices of yoga and meditation can yield significant benefits in stress reduction. Lastly, establishing a healthy work-life balance and maintaining a consistent daily routine can enhance adherence to these strategies.
