Individuals diagnosed with type 2 diabetes must adhere to a dietary regimen that aids in the management of their blood sugar levels and mitigates the occurrence of sugar spikes, particularly following meals. Research conducted by scholars in Italy and Brazil suggests that a ketogenic diet may offer greater advantages in this regard.

Findings of the study

The research published in the journal Metabolites examined the effects of a ketogenic diet on various health parameters, including blood sugar levels, gut microbiota composition, body mass index (BMI), and waist circumference in individuals diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. The findings indicated that the ketogenic diet provided more significant benefits compared to the Mediterranean diet.

The study involved participants aged between 45 and 65 who were classified as obese and had recently received a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes. These individuals were randomly assigned to either a low-calorie ketogenic diet or a Mediterranean-style diet. Stool samples were collected from the participants to assess the diets' effects on their physiological conditions. Notably, those following the low-calorie ketogenic diet exhibited an increased presence of Akkermansia species, a type of gut bacteria recognized for its role in enhancing metabolic health and fortifying gut barrier function.

Can keto diet help regularise blood sugar levels?

Dr. Jason Ng, MD, BA, from the Department of Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh, a specialist in endocrinology and metabolism, stated, "In carefully selected patients who are otherwise healthy, potential weight loss and possible enhancements in gut microbiota from ketogenic diets may be achievable, provided there is close monitoring to mitigate side effects. A ketogenic diet could serve as an effective strategy for managing obesity and improving insulin resistance in individuals who struggle with weight loss or experience fluctuating blood sugar levels."

Details about keto diet

The ketogenic diet comprises a variety of food items, primarily including fish, seafood, meat, poultry, and non-starchy vegetables. This diet is characterized by a low carbohydrate intake and a higher fat content, which facilitates the body's ability to utilize fat as a source of energy.
