Everything’s going well for your skin for a time, making you satisfied with your skincare routine, only to suddenly be startled by breakouts arising unexpectedly. It can be especially aggravating when you have adhered to your skincare regimen like a faithful companion. The abrupt flare-ups can negatively impact your motivation as well, making you feel like you are back at the starting line, regardless of your efforts.

However, not everything is lost, so before you fall into despair and experience an existential crisis when your skin misbehaves, consider what you can improve to prevent this in the future.

In a discussion with a Lifestyle Magazine, Dr. Ameesha Mahajan, Cosmetic Dermatologist and Founder at EdenSkinClinic, elaborated on how one can prevent them.

Identifying the underlying causes, she said, “Sudden skin breakouts are indeed challenging, especially when you are following a consistent skincare routine. However, there can be certain factors behind them that may be unavoidable, such as stress, environmental factors, hormonal changes, etc. But the encouraging news is that it can be managed by incorporating a few daily habits into your skincare routine. ”

Dr. Ameesha Mahajan provided a comprehensive guide that includes 5 essential habits that you should adopt to prevent breakouts in the future:

1. Soft and steady facial cleansing

A good cleanser removes all the dust.

When you excessively cleanse the face or utilize aggressive exfoliators, they remove the skin’s natural protective barrier and result in skin irritation and frequent breakouts. The ideal remedy is to use a mild face cleanser two times daily, and individuals with acne-prone skin should choose cleansers that include salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide.

2. Steering clear of touching your face

Don't touch your face, even if you find zits.

It appears straightforward, but contacting your face can convey dirt, bacteria, and oil, resulting in blocked pores and blemishes. This encompasses picking or squeezing pimples, which can intensify inflammation and result in scarring. Make sure to keep your hands clean and away from your face as much as you can.

3. Healthy eating

Include leafy greens in your diet.

What you consume can reflect on your skin. Foods abundant in sugar, dairy, and processed carbohydrates have been associated with acne outbreaks. Instead, stock up on anti-inflammatory foods such as leafy greens, berries, and fatty fish high in Omega-3s, and ensure you drink ample water to eliminate toxins.

4. Check out the labels on your skincare products

Give more priority to the ingredients in skincare products than the brand name.

Occasionally, it’s your skincare or haircare items that are responsible. Seek out labels that indicate non-comedogenic (won’t obstruct pores), oil-free, or dermatologist-tested. If you’re experiencing breakouts along the hairline or cheeks, you may need to change your shampoo, conditioner, or pillowcase detergent.

5. Always use moisturizer and sunscreen

Applying sunscreen is a no-brainer and the easiest hack to keep your skin protected.

Even if you have oily or combination skin, staying hydrated is essential and important. If you do not regularly use a moisturizer, your skin will respond by producing additional sebum as a compensatory response, which can increase the likelihood of breakouts. Select a lightweight, oil-free moisturizer, and always use a non-comedogenic sunscreen during the daytime. UV exposure can aggravate acne scars and hinder the healing process.
