Combatting Winter Pain: 5 Effective Ways to Manage Rheumatoid Arthritis Symptoms

Rheumatoid arthritis is a persistent autoimmune condition characterized by joint inflammation, which results in pain, stiffness, swelling, and decreased mobility. Over time, this condition can also lead to bone erosion and deformities in the joints. In a discussion with HT Lifestyle, Dr. Deepak Raina, Senior Director and Unit Head of Orthopaedics at Max Super Speciality Hospital in Dwarka, outlined five strategies to alleviate pain and inflammation associated with rheumatoid arthritis, particularly during the winter months.
Adhere to prescribed medications:
Adhering to a prescribed medication plan is essential for managing the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis. Disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs), biologics, and corticosteroids are effective in reducing inflammation and slowing the progression of the disease. Additionally, supplements may be necessary to support bone health and strength.
Engage in Physical therapy:
Participating in gentle exercises such as yoga, swimming, and cycling can help preserve joint mobility and alleviate stiffness. Physical therapy can enhance flexibility and strengthen surrounding muscles. The application of heat or cold packs to the affected joints may also provide relief from pain and inflammation. In some cases, splinting may be necessary to prevent deformities in the extremities.
Maintain a nutritious diet:
A well-rounded diet that includes omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and fiber can aid in diminishing inflammation.
Control stress:
Stress can worsen the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis. Engaging in stress-relief practices such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, or mindfulness can assist in regulating stress levels.
Surgical Options:
Procedures such as Total Hip and Total Knee Replacement involve substituting the damaged joint with an artificial one, which significantly alleviates pain, corrects deformities, and enhances functionality. Surgical interventions for tendon repair and reconstruction in cases of hand and foot deformities can also improve functionality, alleviate pain, and boost mobility.
Dr. Deepak Raina emphasized that even post-surgery, ongoing supportive medication and physical activity are essential to prevent joint erosion associated with rheumatoid arthritis. “Timely diagnosis and intervention are crucial in halting the disease's progression. By adopting these effective strategies to manage RA pain and inflammation, individuals can enhance their quality of life and lessen their dependence on medication,” the doctor remarked.
