Dr. Jaipal Reddy, a surgical oncologist at Onco Life Cancer Center in Talegaon, shared five essential insights regarding the prevention and screening of colon cancer.

1. Regular screening saves lives:

Colon cancer often progresses without noticeable symptoms in its initial stages, making regular screening essential for all individuals. It is recommended that screening begin at age 45, or earlier for those with a family history of the disease. Tests such as colonoscopy, stool-based examinations, and CT colonography are valuable tools for identifying polyps or cancer early, thereby enhancing overall quality of life.

2. Adhere to a healthy diet:

A diet high in fiber, abundant in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes, is effective in lowering the risk of cancer. Additionally, minimizing the consumption of processed and high-fat foods can be beneficial. Staying well-hydrated and moderating alcohol consumption also play a significant role in promoting better colon health.

3. Exercise every day:

It is widely recognized that a sedentary lifestyle increases the likelihood of developing numerous diseases and health issues. Engaging in regular physical activity, including walking, jogging, yoga, or strength training, contributes to better digestion and reduced inflammation within the body. To promote a healthy colon, it is essential to engage in at least 30 minutes of exercise on five days each week.

According to the researchers, exercise is important for cancer prevention and can lower the risk of developing colon, breast, endometrial, kidney, bladder, esophagus and stomach cancers.

4. Family history and genetics:

Individuals with a familial history of colon cancer face an increased risk. Therefore, it is advisable to commence screening at an earlier age, specifically starting at 25. Additionally, genetic counseling can be beneficial in evaluating personal risk. It is important to follow the recommendations provided by the physician.

5. Early symptoms should not be ignored:

Persistent alterations in bowel habits, the presence of blood in the stool, unexpected weight loss, abdominal discomfort, or fatigue should be communicated to a healthcare professional for further assessment.
