If you frequently engage with social media, you may have encountered the trending lemon and ginger shots that individuals are consuming to detoxify their digestive systems, enhance their immune responses, and more. If this is the case, you might be aware that cleansing the gut is also essential for achieving clear skin. Dr. Karan Rajan, an NHS surgeon and YouTuber, emphasizes that gut health significantly influences skin condition.

A healthy gut leads to clear skin

Dr. Rajan shared a video featuring a woman titled ‘POV: you realized you need to heal your gut in order to achieve clear skin,’ in which she consumes lemon and ginger shots. He elaborated on how an unhealthy gut can result in various skin issues and flare-ups, introducing the concept of the ‘gut-skin axis.’ He highlighted that rather than seeking an elaborate skincare regimen to mask imperfections, individuals should prioritize improving their lifestyle habits, which may be more accessible and cost-effective.

Gut health and your skin: How are they related?

Dr. Rajan explains that the gut communicates with the skin through the microbiome and the immune system. For instance, an allergic reaction to certain foods often manifests on the skin, presenting as rashes or swollen lips.

In numerous gut-related conditions, skin issues serve as indicators of underlying gut problems—such as dermatitis herpetiformis (DH) in celiac disease, skin ulcers in Crohn's disease, and Rosacea associated with small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). He further noted that treating SIBO with antibiotics, which impact gut bacteria, often results in the improvement of Rosacea as well.

“We also know, for instance, that children with eczema typically exhibit lower levels of gut microbiome diversity and beneficial gut bacteria. This indicates that an imbalanced gut microbiome can lead to skin inflammation,” he concluded.

Brain, gut health and your skin

The interconnection between brain health, gut health, and skin condition is significant. According to Dr. Rajan, the condition of the brain can influence the state of the skin, a relationship referred to as the brain-gut-skin axis. He noted that conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), which can result in severe abdominal discomfort, may lead to emotional distress, subsequently triggering flare-ups of chronic skin issues like psoriasis, eczema, or acne. Furthermore, factors such as diet, sleep quality, physical activity, and environmental influences play a crucial role in maintaining skin health.
