Cervical Cancer and Lifestyle Choices: Hidden Risks Every Woman Should Know

Cervical cancer ranks among the most prevalent forms of cancer, arising from the abnormal proliferation of cells in the cervix. This condition is primarily attributed to a persistent infection by the human papillomavirus (HPV). Additionally, various lifestyle choices and environmental influences may play a significant role in the onset of cervical cancer.

In a discussion with HT Lifestyle, Dr. Nivedita Kaul, the lead consultant in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at CK Birla Hospital (R) in Delhi, remarked, “The demands of modern life often lead to significant stress, and when this stress is compounded by poor lifestyle choices, it markedly elevates the risk of chronic diseases, including cancer. A critical factor in this equation is diet; a consumption pattern high in ultra-processed foods and saturated fats is a major contributor to numerous health issues.”

“Moreover, a sedentary lifestyle that results in obesity further increases the likelihood of chronic diseases, including cancer. The risks associated with smoking and alcohol consumption—both alone and in conjunction with other detrimental habits—also predispose individuals to a variety of health conditions,” she continued.

Lifestyle habits and cervical cancer: How are they linked?

Exploring the connection between lifestyle habits and cervical cancer, Dr. Nivedita Kaul explained, “Cervical cancer is predominantly caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), which is a sexually transmitted infection. One of the most significant lifestyle factors associated with a heightened risk of cervical cancer is sexual promiscuity; having multiple sexual partners raises the chances of contracting HPV. The absence of barrier contraceptives, such as condoms, further increases this risk. In addition to these specific behaviors, an unhealthy diet, insufficient physical activity, smoking, and alcohol use can amplify the overall risk of developing cervical cancer and other malignancies.”

Engage in regular physical activity: Participate in aerobic exercises, strength training, and mental wellness practices such as meditation. These activities are vital for maintaining a healthy body weight, which plays a significant role in the prevention of chronic illnesses, including cancer.

Refrain from smoking and alcohol consumption: Reducing or completely avoiding tobacco and alcohol can greatly lower the risk of numerous health issues.

Schedule routine health examinations: It is important to have regular health screenings that are appropriate for one’s age. For women, this includes pap smear tests to identify cervical pre-cancer and cancer at an early stage.

Immunization: Ensure that young girls receive the HPV vaccine prior to becoming sexually active.
