What is macular degeneration?

The macula represents the area of the retina essential for clear and central vision. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a disorder that affects the macula, leading to a deterioration in visual acuity. Pistachios for eye health:

The study was conducted to understand how consuming two handfuls of pistachios can help in protecting vision in older adults. Pistachios contain lutein, a natural plant pigment that helps in protecting eye health.

The researchers observed that people who added two handfuls of unsalted, shelled, dry-roasted pistachios into their daily diet demonstrated significant improvements in their macular pigment optical density (MPOD), in just six weeks.

Dr. Tammy Scott, a neuropsychologist specializing in research and clinical practice, and the principal author of the study, stated to the New York Post, “Our research indicates that pistachios are not merely a delicious snack; they may also be beneficial for eye health. By adding a handful of pistachios to your diet, you can enhance your lutein intake, which is essential for safeguarding your eyes.” Furthermore, Dr. Elizabeth Johnson, a co-researcher on the study, remarked, “Lutein accumulates selectively in the brain, similar to its behaviour in the retina, where it may contribute to the reduction of oxidative stress and inflammation.” 

Pistachios are rich in numerous health advantages. They assist in weight management and support beneficial gut bacteria. Additionally, they play a role in regulating blood pressure and cholesterol levels, making them an excellent choice for a healthy snack.
