Can Women Conceive Despite Ovarian Cysts? Surgeon Discusses Symptoms and Treatments
7 days ago | 5 Views
Ovarian cysts are quite common and tend to appear and disappear. When they don’t stick around for long, they’re generally seen as harmless. However, ultrasound scans are useful for assessing their condition. In a chat with HT Lifestyle, Dr. Sampada Dessai, a consultant in gynecological cancer and robotic surgery at PD Hinduja Hospital & MRC in Mahim, mentioned, “Treatment is only necessary if the cysts are large, persistently growing, or suspected to be precancerous or cancerous, especially before trying to conceive. With the rise in ultrasound use, ovarian cysts are often detected during pregnancy. The good news is that not all cysts pose a risk; in fact, most are benign.”
What signs should you look out for if you have ovarian cysts?
Many cysts are asymptomatic and are usually found during routine ultrasounds in pregnancy. However, in rare cases, if a cyst becomes large, twists, ruptures, or suddenly grows, it can lead to symptoms such as pain and abdominal swelling, or it might be detected by a doctor during an exam. Additionally, larger cysts can potentially trigger preterm labor or complicate a normal delivery, Dr. Sampada Dessai noted.
Identifying ovarian cysts
The surgeon explained that if a cyst is suspected, the best initial step is to perform an ultrasound. This imaging technique evaluates the size and features of the cyst, checks for blood flow, and looks for any signs that could indicate cancer. MRI is also a safe option during pregnancy and provides a clearer view of the cyst. Additionally, tumor markers are blood tests that can indicate whether the cyst is cancerous, but it's important to note that pregnancy can affect these test results, making them less reliable at times.
What are the ways to manage ovarian cysts?
How ovarian cysts are treated during pregnancy really depends on a few factors: the type and size of the cyst, any symptoms the patient might have, how the cyst affects the pregnancy (or the other way around), and how far along the pregnancy is when the cyst is found. According to Dr. Sampada Dessai, most cysts are simple, fluid-filled, and smaller than 5 cm, and they usually go away on their own. Only a tiny fraction of cysts need treatment while pregnant. She also mentioned that having ovarian cysts doesn’t make pregnancy unsafe, but it’s important to keep monitoring the situation for any necessary medical action.
