Can One Workout Boost Brain Health? Study Reveals Surprising Findings
26 days ago | 5 Views
Health professionals advocate for regular exercise due to its beneficial effects on overall well-being. However, a recent study indicates that even short bouts of physical activity can yield considerable advantages for brain function. The research, published in Communications Psychology, highlights that brief exercise sessions can significantly enhance cognitive abilities, particularly in tasks that demand rapid responses and mental agility. Barry Giesbrecht, the study's author and head of the Attention Lab at UC Santa Barbara, remarked, “Human cognitive neuroscience focuses on understanding the neural mechanisms underlying cognitive functions and their relationship to behavior. This field relies on controlled laboratory experiments where participants perform tasks that we can precisely monitor and evaluate. Additionally, we often assess brain activity through various neuroimaging techniques.”
Findings of the study:
The investigation involved the analysis of 113 studies, encompassing a total of 4,390 participants, published from 1995 to 2023. The objective was to explore the effects of a single session of exercise on brain functions and cognitive performance. To establish the correlation, the study incorporated various forms of exercise, including cycling, running, high-intensity interval training (HIIT), resistance training, and sports-related activities. The intensity of the exercises varied from light to vigorous.
The findings were unexpected. The researchers noted that even a single session of physical activity can yield minor yet meaningful enhancements in overall cognitive performance. Tasks that focus on executive functions, such as inhibition and cognitive flexibility, exhibited more reliable improvements. In contrast, memory and other cognitive areas showed less consistent advancements.
In an interview with PsyPost, study author Barry Giesbrecht remarked, “It is widely recognized that regular exercise positively influences emotional and cognitive functions, alongside general health benefits. Our research demonstrates that even a single acute exercise session can positively impact cognition, particularly in executive functioning.” Additionally, consider the study that explores whether intermittent exercise provides more enduring cognitive benefits compared to continuous exercise.
