Can Coffee Impact Posture & Balance in Older Adults? New Study Reveals the Truth!

It is commonly thought that coffee consumption may negatively influence postural performance and balance in older adults. However, recent research challenges this notion. The study, published in Experimental Gerontology, examined the effects of coffee on control and posture among older adults, yielding unexpected results. It was found that occasionally enjoying a robust cup of coffee is not as detrimental as previously believed.
Study Findings:
The research involved 22 healthy older adults (12 men and 10 women) with an average age of 68 years. Participants engaged in four sessions where they consumed either caffeinated coffee, decaffeinated coffee, a placebo beverage, or no fluid at all. Following these sessions, they were assessed through various balance and posture tests, including standing with their eyes closed and standing on soft surfaces. The center of pressure of their bodies was measured, alongside physical functions such as chair stands, arm curls, a timed walking test, and a step test.
Throughout the study, researchers noted that coffee had a minimal impact on the posture and balance control of older adults. Those who consumed caffeinated coffee exhibited performance levels comparable to those who drank decaffeinated coffee, the placebo, or had no fluid intake.

Caffeinated coffee vs. decaffeinated coffee:
A slight alteration was identified – it was noted that individuals consuming caffeinated coffee exhibited a higher frequency of minor balance adjustments compared to those who did not. Nevertheless, this observation does not indicate that coffee has a substantial impact on posture and balance control.
In their study, the researchers concluded, “This implies that coffee has minimal effects on balance performance or physical function, yet it may affect both the complexity of balance and the strategies employed to sustain an upright position. In summary, a robust cup of coffee does not significantly affect balance or functional performance metrics in healthy older adults.”
