It may seem that moderate coffee intake is harmless for the majority of adults. However, online fitness coach Dan Go asserts, “If you drink coffee every morning, you’re technically doing drugs on a daily basis.” In an Instagram post dated April 2, Dan discussed the impact of coffee consumption and elaborated on its classification as a stimulant drug.

Fitness coach calls coffee a drug

Prior to exploring the scientific perspective on coffee and its potential health risks comparable to those of addictive substances, let us first consider Dan's remarks. He stated, “If you consume coffee each morning, you are, in a sense, using drugs daily. And that is acceptable.”

He subsequently enumerated the advantages of coffee consumption as outlined by Johns Hopkins Medicine, stating:

⦿ You could live longer.

⦿ Your body may process glucose (or sugar) better.

⦿ You’re less likely to develop heart failure.

⦿ You are less likely to develop Parkinson’s disease.

⦿ Improve liver function

⦿ Stronger DNA

⦿ Your odds of getting colon cancer will go way down.

⦿ You may decrease your risk of getting Alzheimer’s disease.

⦿ You’re not as likely to suffer a stroke.

‘Caffeine is an amazing drug, but be responsible’

Dan remarked, “This does not even take into account the cognitive and energy enhancement provided by a cup of coffee. As with all substances, moderation is key. Caffeine is a remarkable stimulant, but it should be used responsibly.”

In his post, he also mentioned, “Approximately a year ago, I abstained from coffee for six weeks to observe the effects. While I experienced a slight improvement in my sleep, I ultimately concluded that life is more enjoyable with coffee than without it. Consuming 2-3 cups of coffee along with 2-3 cups of green tea each day is associated with a 32 percent reduction in stroke risk and a 28 percent decrease in dementia risk.”

He further stated, “I must admit, I feel somewhat let down each time I finish my morning coffee. If you consume coffee, you are engaging in daily drug use. Many people will ingest 500-1000 calories through a single morning coffee and then question why they are not losing weight. If you find it impossible to start your day without coffee, you could be considered a drug addict. One of the best morning routines I have adopted is drinking a liter of water with electrolytes before my coffee intake.”

What is caffeine, and is it addictive?

A report from Webmd.com in 2023 indicates that caffeine is a chemical compound that activates the central nervous system, muscles, heart, and various other bodily functions, playing a role in regulating blood pressure. This naturally bitter substance is present in the leaves and seeds of more than 60 different plants. Additionally, caffeine can be synthesized in laboratories and incorporated into food products, medications, and beverages. Due to its ability to enhance alertness, caffeine may be considered a 'mind-altering' substance. However, the FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) has classified it as a food product that is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) when consumed in moderation.

According to Webmd.com, caffeine does not pose a health risk comparable to that of addictive substances. However, abruptly discontinuing caffeine intake may lead to withdrawal symptoms such as headaches, fatigue, anxiety, irritability, and difficulty concentrating, particularly for individuals accustomed to consuming two or more cups of coffee daily.

The report further notes that, unlike certain drugs and alcohol, caffeine does not induce severe withdrawal symptoms. Gradually reducing caffeine consumption over several weeks may prevent withdrawal effects altogether. Consequently, experts do not categorize regular caffeine consumption as an addiction.
