Beauty Influencer Recommends Turmeric, Lemon & Curd Pack for Dark Underarms: Does It Really Work and Is It Safe?
13 days ago | 5 Views
Lightening dark underarms requires time and a bit of patience. Beauty influencer Sid emphasizes that with consistent and gentle care, you can achieve the results you want. In a video she shared on Instagram on January 11, she outlined some natural methods to lighten dark underarms. In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr. DM Mahajan, a senior consultant in dermatology at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, shared his thoughts on Sid's home remedies.
He mentioned, “Dark underarms are a frequent dermatological issue, often resulting from post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation due to factors like friction, shaving, irritating deodorants, or underlying metabolic conditions like acanthosis nigricans. Social media often promotes natural remedies—like turmeric, lemon juice, potato juice, and a mix of coconut oil with baking soda—as possible solutions. From an allopathic perspective, while these ingredients may have some beneficial properties, their effectiveness and safety can differ.”
Before we explore more of Dr. Mahajan's insights on Sid's remedies, let’s take a look at Sid's three recommendations:
1. Yogurt, turmeric, and lemon mixture
She mentioned, "Got dark underarms? I can help with that! Just combine 3 tablespoons of yogurt with 1 teaspoon of turmeric and the juice of half a lemon. If your skin is fair, feel free to leave out the turmeric and use honey instead. Mix everything together, apply it to your underarms, and let it sit for 20 minutes. After that, just wipe it off with a warm towel."
2. Baking soda mixed with water
For her second tip, Sid shared, “Baking soda is super effective. Just take a tablespoon of it, mix in a bit of water to create a paste, and then scrub your underarms with it. You can do this three times a week, and afterward, apply some aloe vera gel to your underarms. It’ll be soothing, feel amazing, and keep them hydrated.”
3. Apple cider vinegar mixed with water
She mentioned, "Just mix equal parts of apple cider vinegar and water; you don’t need much. Combine them in a cup, apply it softly to your underarms, let it sit for 5 minutes, and then wipe it off."
She also suggested opting for natural deodorants that don’t contain harsh chemicals, as these can irritate your skin and lead to discoloration. Sid wrapped up by saying, "Finally, make sure to use a natural deodorant, and if you shave, always go for a sharp razor along with shaving cream or oil."
Do these home remedies really do the trick?
Dr. Mahajan shared with HT Lifestyle that turmeric is rich in curcumin, which is recognized for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits. Some topical products have demonstrated a slight reduction in pigmentation during clinical trials. On the other hand, lemon juice, known for its citric acid, is quite acidic and can irritate or even burn sensitive areas like the underarms. Potato juice is milder and contains enzymes that are thought to help lighten skin, but most of the support for this is anecdotal. Coconut oil is great for soothing and hydrating the skin, but when mixed with baking soda—an alkaline substance—it might upset the skin's natural pH, leading to irritation.
Dr. Mahajan also mentioned that treatment should be based on identifying the root causes and utilizing evidence-based methods. Commonly recommended topical treatments include niacinamide, glycolic acid, or azelaic acid. For more stubborn cases, options like chemical peels or laser treatments may be suggested under professional guidance.
In conclusion, while natural remedies can hold cultural significance or anecdotal support, those dealing with dark underarms should seek advice from a dermatologist for safe, effective, and tailored treatment. Dr. Mahajan emphasized, “A careful and well-informed approach is essential for achieving the best results.”
