This year, the heatwave conditions have raised concerns as early as April, with temperatures exceeding normal levels across numerous areas. Heatwaves are a prevalent issue in India throughout the summer months—especially from late April to June—and are more pronounced in the northern, central, and western regions of the country.

To ensure safety during this period, it is crucial to remain well-hydrated, steer clear of direct sunlight, and wear light, breathable attire. While the majority of individuals concentrate on safeguarding their bodies, it is also vital to tend to the eyes.

Heatwaves can result in various eye problems, including irritation, dryness, redness, allergies, and temporary vision discomfort.

Extreme summer has arrived early in most parts of the country as dangerously high temperatures have been recorded in many states like West Bengal, Bihar and Andhra Pradesh. Extreme heat can take a toll on your eye health too with redness, itchiness and burning sensation becoming more common.

Heatwave-related eye issues

Dr. Mandeep Singh Basu, the Director of Dr. Basu Eye Care Center, shared some eye problems that tend to get worse in the summer.

    • Dry eye – Because of high temperatures and insufficient water, the moisture in the eyes begins to diminish. Irritation and redness in the eyes – The eyes turn red, and many individuals also experience a burning sensation in the eyes. Photophobia (sensitivity to light) – As a result of intense sunlight, the eyes lose their capacity to endure sunlight or bright light. Conjunctivitis (eye allergy or infection) – The likelihood of viral and bacterial infections in the eyes rises during summer days. Blurred vision – Occasionally, due to reduced water intake during summer days or extreme heat, the eyesight may become blurred.

The ancient practice of Ayurveda remedies for improving eyesight predominantly involve the utilization of ancient herbs and therapies such as Netra kriyakalpas and Panchakarma.

Ayurvedic solutions to shield your eyes from the heatwave

Dr. Mandeep Singh Basu recommended some Ayurvedic tips to keep your eyes safe during a heat wave:

  1. Triphala eye wash – Soaking Triphala powder in water overnight and using that water to wash the eyes in the morning helps to alleviate dryness and irritation.
  2. Rose water – Utilize rose water to refresh the eyes.
  3. Cool sandalwood paste – Creating a paste from sandalwood powder and rose water and applying it on the forehead offers a soothing effect for the eyes.
  4. Aloe Vera Gel – Applying aloe vera gel around the eyes offers relief from dryness and irritation.
  5. Ghrita Netra Tarpan – Netra Tarpan is a treatment in Ayurveda that provides nourishment and cooling for the eyes.
  6. Cucumber and Potli Compress – Placing chilled cucumber slices on the eyes delivers a cooling sensation.
  7. Take care of hydration – Consume coconut water, mango panna, and sheetali sharbat to ensure the body remains hydrated.

Dr. Mandeep Singh Basu mentioned that because of high temperatures and insufficient water, issues like irritation, dryness, redness, and even blurred vision in the eyes become more prevalent. He recommended, “In these circumstances, maintaining hydration to safeguard your eyes, utilizing sunglasses when exposed to sunlight, and applying Ayurvedic solutions such as Triphala eye wash, rose water, aloe vera gel, and Ayurvedic eye drops can be advantageous for the eyes. This aids in shielding against heat and ensuring proper care for the eyes. ”

Additional ways to maintain eye health

Dr. Mandeep Singh Basu wrapped it up by saying, "Keep your eyes safe this summer by rocking some shades, cutting down on screen time, and giving your eyes a good clean. Plus, using Ayurvedic remedies can help cool and nourish your eyes naturally."
