Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a condition that affects a lot of women and often brings along the annoying issue of acne. The hormonal imbalances associated with PCOS, especially the higher levels of androgens or "male hormones," can cause the skin to produce more oil, which clogs pores and leads to breakouts.

This can really affect a woman's confidence and overall health. In a chat with HT Lifestyle, Dr. Govindarajan, who heads R&D at Kapiva, mentioned that Ayurveda offers a holistic way to tackle both PCOS and acne by addressing the root hormonal issues. He went on to explain further -

1. Ashwagandha, often referred to as Indian ginseng or winter cherry

Ashwagandha, a powerful adaptogen, aids in stress management, which is a key factor for both conditions.

2. Shatavari, also known as wild asparagus

Shatavari is recognized for its benefits to women's health, helping to balance hormones and support the reproductive system.

3. Neem

Neem is especially good at controlling oil production, which helps stop clogged pores—one of the main causes of acne in women with PCOS.

Neem can be used while bathing, on a wound, for dandruff, acne, and even as a herbal tea.

4. Tulsi, also known as holy basil

Tulsi aids in managing stress-related acne and also helps with the symptoms of PCOS.

Holy basil: Holy basil or Tulsi helps control levels of androgens and insulin level in women with PCOS. It has anti-androgenic properties that can be helpful in managing the symptoms of PCOS. Women with PCOS have to deal with acne and excess hair due to excess production of male sex hormones. Holy basil is an excellent agent that aids in controlling these hormones in women with PCOS.

5. Yashtimadhu, also known as licorice

Yashtimadhu helps with detoxification and tackles internal imbalances that can cause skin problems such as acne. This cleansing herb supports the development of clear and healthy skin.

Licorice root is a soothing herb that is widely used for digestive health.

6. Turmeric, also known as haldi

Turmeric is known for its strong anti-inflammatory and healing abilities, making it great for calming irritated skin.

7. Triphala, also known as amla or Indian gooseberry

Triphala boosts digestion and helps detoxify the body, which can lead to healthier skin from the inside out.

Dr. Govindarajan stated, “These Ayurvedic herbs collaborate effectively to restore balance in the body and support clearer skin for individuals with PCOS. By adding these herbs to a thoughtful lifestyle approach, women can tackle the root issues of PCOS and acne, achieving balance and lasting relief rather than just covering up the symptoms.”
