In a discussion with HT Lifestyle, Dr. Karthik Krishnan, Vice President at The Arya Vaidya Pharmacy Ltd in Coimbatore, stated, “While traditional methods may concentrate on merely alleviating symptoms, Ayurveda seeks to identify and rectify the underlying causes of stress, which frequently arise from imbalances in our doshas (biological energies) and lifestyle choices. It is essential to not only manage stress but to tackle it fundamentally by harmonizing the body and mind with the natural world. Ayurveda perceives stress as a disruption in the doshas—primarily Vata and Pitta—often triggered by irregular lifestyles, poor dietary habits, and insufficient rest.”

He further explained, “Practices rooted in Ayurveda, such as meditation, mindful breathing (pranayama), and personalized nutrition, are instrumental in restoring balance to these energies, thereby mitigating the physiological effects of stress. Potent herbs like Ashwagandha, Shatavari, and Brahmi assist the body in adapting to stress and regaining its natural equilibrium. Treatments are tailored to each individual's unique constitution, or prakriti, providing stress relief through herbal solutions or detoxifying therapies such as Shiro Abhyanga, Shiro Dhara, and Pada Abhyanga. Each of these therapies is specifically designed to alleviate stress and tension in targeted areas, offering a comprehensive approach to reducing both physical and mental strain.”

Dr. Karthik Krishnan emphasized that Ayurveda views stress management as a lifelong endeavor, necessitating self-awareness, ongoing care, and a dedication to harmonizing the body, mind, and spirit. In a world characterized by overwork, the principles of Ayurveda serve as a vital reminder that genuine well-being originates from within, nurturing resilience, tranquility, and balance in all facets of life. Dr. Sachin, BAMS, Medical Advisor at Rasayanam Ayurveda, noted that in today's demanding environment, stress has become an omnipresent issue for many individuals. Ayurveda provides a comprehensive strategy for stress management, focusing on both the underlying causes and the symptoms. He stated, "By achieving equilibrium among the mind, body, and spirit, we employ established practices such as meditation, adaptogenic herbs, and lifestyle changes. Herbs like Ashwagandha and Brahmi work in concert to soothe the nervous system and enhance resilience to stress. The goal is to foster inner peace, not by removing obstacles, but by preparing the body and mind to confront them with composure."

Adding to this discourse, Ravichandran Venkatraman, Founder of Alive Consultancy, elaborated on the traditional Indian understanding of human existence, which encompasses five layers: Annamaya Kosha (Earth), representing the body sustained by food; Praanamaya Kosha (Water), symbolizing life energy supported by breath; Manomaya Kosha (Fire), the mental layer influenced by thoughts and emotions; Vijyanmaya Kosha (Air), embodying wisdom derived from knowledge, intuition, and will; and Anandmaya Kosha (Space), representing the layer of bliss.

He stated, "In tackling stress management within a demanding environment, I contend that the essential factor is the regulation of one's energy throughout the day. This encompasses the management of our energy across multiple dimensions: Physical Energy through dietary choices (Rajasic, Tamasic, Saatvic); Mental Energy through the control of thoughts and breath; Life Energy through the cultivation of will, discipline, resilience, and empathy; and Environmental Energy through Rajas (Kinetic Energy), Tamas (Potential Energy), and Satwa (Essence of Consciousness)."
