Are you easily aroused by porn? Studies suggest it can negatively impact your real-life relationships
3 days ago | 5 Views
A recent study revealed a negative link between arousal from pornography and satisfaction in relationships. It showed that people who get highly aroused by porn often see a drop in both relationship satisfaction and stability. This research, published in the Archives of Sexual Behavior in August 2024, was highlighted by Psypost.org on March 23.
The Australian study emphasizes that those who are easily aroused by pornography might face lower sexual satisfaction and poorer relationship quality and stability. This indicates that pornography could have a harmful effect on romantic partnerships.
Sexual arousal is crucial for the health and stability of romantic relationships. The study found that individuals with greater arousal from pornography were more likely to experience a decline in relationship stability over time.
Why these results are important
The research pinpointed a number of factors that act as intermediaries, such as:
⦿ Intimacy avoidance: People who experience strong arousal from pornography might steer clear of getting close to their partner.
⦿ Partner dissatisfaction: Those in a relationship with someone who has high pornography-induced arousal may feel unhappy or unfulfilled.
⦿ Conflict and communication: Struggles with communication and resolving conflicts can lead to a drop in relationship satisfaction and stability.
Additional information about the research
The authors of the study aimed to investigate how pornography use relates to the quality and stability of romantic relationships, as well as sexual satisfaction. They proposed that people who feel sexually attracted to their partners would see an improvement in their relationship over time. However, they were unsure if being aroused by pornography would lead to better or worse relationship quality, prompting them to delve deeper into this issue.
The research involved 309 participants, aged 18 to 72, all of whom had been in a romantic relationship for at least six months. Among them, 67 percent identified as heterosexual and 25 percent as bisexual. On average, participants had been with their current partner for seven years, with 9 percent in non-monogamous relationships and 71 percent without children.
Findings indicated that those who felt more aroused by their romantic partners generally reported better relationship quality, increased stability, and higher sexual satisfaction. Conversely, individuals who expressed greater arousal to pornography in the initial survey were more likely to experience lower relationship stability and diminished sexual satisfaction two months later. They also tended to engage with pornography more often.
