Are You Coping Too Well? The Mask of High-Functioning Anxiety
19 days ago | 5 Views
The typical, widely accepted depiction of anxiety often includes symptoms such as restlessness, social withdrawal, nail-biting, excessive sweating, trembling, and an overwhelming sense of distress—essentially, a form of visible nervousness that is difficult to overlook. Much of this representation focuses on a breakdown or a state of being on the verge of collapse.
However, there is another dimension to consider: anxiety that conceals itself behind confident expressions and relentless activity, characterized by an overachieving drive that others may admire or even envy. This is known as high-functioning anxiety; it presents a composed exterior while the internal turmoil remains just as severe.
In a discussion with HT Lifestyle, Piyali Maity, Clinical Director of Counselling Operations at 1to1help, elaborated on the characteristics of high-functioning anxiety.
What is high-functioning anxiety?

High-functioning anxiety resembles a concealed tempest; it often goes unnoticed, even by those who endure it. In contrast to more visible forms of anxiety, this variant remains hidden in plain sight, masked by polished smiles and an air of confidence.
Piyali elaborated on this concept, stating, “High-functioning anxiety refers to individuals who seem exceptionally successful, organized, and composed externally, yet internally grapple with overthinking, ongoing worry or fear of failure, and self-doubt. Despite their capability to handle everyday tasks, they frequently struggle to unwind. While it is not classified as a clinically diagnosed mental health disorder, it is remarkably prevalent. With awareness, boundaries, and support, it can be effectively managed.”
5 signs of anxiety
You may be outgoing and getting all things down, but deep down, the anxiety is obvious.
Piyali shared these signs:
- You may find yourself dreading certain situations yet pushing through the anxiety by working even harder. Sometimes, almost unconsciously, you might try to regain a sense of control by overpreparing or micromanaging.
- You may find it hard to fall asleep, have appetite loss, muscle tension, and elevated heart rate, and find it challenging to manage even day-to-day tasks.
- You may think in absolutes- black and white- and jump to worst-case scenarios, even when those fears are irrational.
- You may feel especially vulnerable to criticism, worry excessively about your relationships, career, or self-worth, and carry a persistent sense of not doing enough, even when you’re meeting or exceeding your goals.
