With all the recent chatter about Ozempic and other weight loss medications, it's easy to get mixed up about how supplements actually function in the body and whether they really help with quicker weight loss. On the April 19 episode of the Figuring Out With Raj Shamani podcast, Mihir Gadani, co-founder of the plant-based supplement brand Oziva Nutrition, emphasized that weight loss drugs are only effective when combined with a healthy lifestyle, regular exercise, and strength training.
During the podcast, Mihir pointed out that many people mistakenly believe that weight loss medications like Ozempic and Wegovy are quick fixes for achieving a toned physique. He cautioned that while some weight loss trends might show results for a short time, neglecting overall health can lead to negative consequences down the line.
How do weight loss medications function?
Mihir explained that weight loss medications work by manipulating the body's hunger signals. He talked about the gut-brain connection, noting how our appetite signals influence our desire for food. He mentioned, “When we’re full, the gut sends a message to the brain indicating it’s time to stop eating. The same goes for when we’re hungry. These weight loss drugs interfere with this process, which is why we don’t feel as hungry.”
He also touched on the recent buzz around the term "Ozempic face." According to him, people use this term to describe a leaner face and tighter skin, which can occur when individuals rely on weight loss drugs without addressing muscle loss.
Shedding pounds and losing muscle mass:
Mihir pointed out that when we lose weight, we often lose muscle too, which isn't good for our health. It's important to address this right from the start. That's why we need to focus on our health, be mindful of our diet, and incorporate strength training into our daily routine. "Losing muscle during weight loss is unhealthy," Mihir emphasized.
Inflammation within the body:
Mihir Gadani talked about inflammation in the body and suggested that we should eat a low-glycemic diet packed with fiber, antioxidants, and foods that promote the growth of beneficial gut bacteria.
