Are Juice Detox Diets Harmful? Study Highlights Risks for Gut and Oral Bacteria
2 months ago | 5 Views
Are you currently following a juice-based diet aimed at detoxification and improving digestion? It is important to consider that the outcomes may not be entirely positive. A recent study conducted by Dr. Melinda Ring at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine suggests that these popular juice-cleansing diets could negatively impact the trillions of bacteria residing in our oral and gastrointestinal systems.
Findings of the study:
According to research published in the journal Nutrients, popular juice-cleansing diets can significantly impact the bacterial ecosystem, occasionally resulting in adverse effects. Even a brief period of adherence to such dietary regimens can severely affect beneficial bacteria.
The study involved 14 healthy adults aged 18 to 35, who were randomly assigned to one of three dietary patterns for three days: an exclusive juice fast, a combination of juice and regular food, or a plant-based whole food diet. Subsequently, saliva, inner cheek, and stool samples were collected from the participants.
Notable alterations in the oral bacterial environment were detected among the participants, characterized by a marked increase in bacteria associated with inflammation and a reduction in beneficial bacteria within the oral cavity.

Dr. Melinda Ring, the senior author and director of the Osher Center for Integrative Health at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, stated, "While many individuals perceive juicing as a beneficial detoxification method, this study provides a sobering perspective. The intake of substantial quantities of juice with minimal fibre may disrupt microbiome balance, potentially resulting in adverse effects such as inflammation and compromised gut health."
How juice cleansing can affect gut and oral bacteria:
Contemporary juicing techniques eliminate a significant portion of the insoluble fiber present in whole fruits and vegetables, primarily emphasizing natural sugars. Dietary fiber is essential for the flourishing of beneficial gut bacteria; therefore, a diet predominantly consisting of juices may influence the overall composition of gut bacteria. Conversely, adhering to a diet rich in whole plant foods while steering clear of processed items, alcohol, and caffeine can be advantageous for maintaining healthy gut bacteria.
