Menstruation is a natural biological process experienced by nearly half of the population, yet it often remains a taboo subject, leading to significant gaps in awareness and understanding. This stigma surrounding periods has serious consequences. In a recent interview with CNN-News18 Showsha, actress Ananya Panday emphasized the importance of discussing menstruation openly.
‘A topic free from shame’
Ananya stated, “Menstruation is not something we should feel ashamed of. It is a normal biological occurrence, and it is crucial for everyone to engage in conversations about it to eliminate the associated stigma. Many challenges arise for girls, including rashes, irritation, limited mobility, and staining.”
Reflecting on her first experience with menstruation
When asked about her introduction to menstruation, whether through family discussions or school education, Ananya recounted her initial experience. She admitted to feeling confused and frightened at the time, but now she communicates openly about it with her family.
She shared, “Prior to my first period, there wasn’t much discussion at home... a few classmates had already started menstruating, but it was still a very secretive topic. When I got my period at school, I was completely unaware of what was happening. Upon returning home, I was terrified, thinking something was wrong. However, my mother (Bhavana Pandey) and grandmother were thrilled and celebrated the occasion with gifts, saying, 'This is a moment to celebrate.' I believe everyone should approach it this way to remove the stigma... now I even discuss it with my father (Chunky Panday).”
The actress also highlighted the challenges she faces while working during her menstrual cycle, noting that even with menstrual cramps or a lack of restroom facilities on set, she continues to perform. She described the experience as ‘very uncomfortable’ but emphasized the importance of seeking assistance, even if it may cause discomfort for those around her.
Frequently, symptoms associated with menstruation are overlooked or entirely disregarded. Ananya expressed her frustration, stating that it is "very annoying" when others attribute her reactions to "PMS." She emphasized the significance of having supportive male allies during this time.
