Actor Ajith Kumar's team recently secured third place in the Dubai 24H race. In an interview with Gulf News conducted during the event, Ajith emphasized the importance of prioritizing the safety and well-being of individuals involved in a road accident, advising against taking matters into one's own hands. He urged that if one encounters a road accident victim, it is crucial not to lift them and place them in a vehicle, but rather to call for an ambulance and await the arrival of paramedics.

'People think they are being good Samaritans'

Ajith remarked, “People often believe they are acting as good Samaritans.” He recounted an incident involving a friend who became 'confined to a wheelchair' after bystanders attempted to assist him following a road accident, rather than waiting for professional medical help. Dr. Suranjit Chatterjee, a senior consultant in internal medicine at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, corroborated this by stating that individuals without first aid training should refrain from intervening and should instead wait for medical professionals.

Ajith further stated, “In the event of a road accident, the attempt to be good Samaritans leads to complications. In India and many other regions, people mistakenly believe they are helping by picking up an accident victim and placing them in a vehicle. However, if the individual has a spinal injury, such actions can result in lifelong disabilities.”

He remarked that a very close friend of his was involved in a car accident in Pune. The local bystanders, believing they were acting compassionately as good Samaritans, rushed to assist him. Unfortunately, he suffered a broken vertebra and is now confined to a wheelchair. He emphasized the importance of educating the public on proper responses to such incidents, stating that individuals should not approach an accident victim and hastily move them as if they were a ragdoll, placing them into a taxi or auto-rickshaw. It is crucial to wait for paramedics to arrive. Additionally, he noted that some people may offer water to the victims, which can be detrimental if immediate surgery is required, as consuming water could complicate the situation and potentially endanger the victim's life. There are numerous critical considerations that the public must be aware of in these circumstances.

Wait for medical help

When witnessing a road accident, the initial action you should take is to ensure your own safety, as advised by Dr. Suranjit Chatterjee. Following this, the subsequent steps are as follows:

⦿ Contact emergency services: Your foremost responsibility is to alert an ambulance or emergency responders. It is crucial to provide them with precise and detailed information regarding the accident's location, the number of individuals involved, and their conditions.

⦿ Evaluate the scene: Confirm that the environment is safe for you to approach. If it is safe and does not pose additional risks, you may need to relocate the injured individual away from potential hazards such as traffic or fire.

⦿ Administer first aid: If the injured person is in a critical situation and you possess the necessary training, offer first aid appropriate to the circumstances. For instance:

• In cases of bleeding: Apply pressure to control the bleeding.

• For individuals who are unconscious: Assess their breathing and pulse. If required and you are trained, initiate CPR.

• In the event of fractures: Keep the individual immobile and refrain from moving them if there is a risk of spinal injury.

The essential point is to promptly call for professional medical assistance and provide help as needed while awaiting the arrival of emergency services.
