Acne-prone skin can be pretty sensitive, so if you have it, you’ve got to be extra careful. It’s important to pay attention to your daily habits. Keeping acne at bay isn’t just about the skincare products you use; it’s also about what you do every day. If you tend to break out, you should be aware of certain things that might irritate your skin.

Dermatologist Dr. Garekar recently shared some insights on Instagram about three common mistakes that people with acne-prone skin should steer clear of.

Three typical blunders

Overwashing strips the natural oil from skin.

Dr. Garekar highlighted three simple habits that, if adjusted, can really benefit acne-prone skin. While these habits might seem minor, they can actually make acne issues worse. They may not appear significant at first, but over time, they can lead to breakouts, irritation, and an overall imbalance in your skin.

  • Washing your face too much.
  • Putting on makeup while exercising.
  • Not using moisturizers.

These are pretty ordinary mistakes, so what makes them stand out? Let’s dive into the reasons.

Understand the reasons

Everyday habits can lead to some common skin mistakes. On particularly humid days, you might feel the urge to wash your face more often. When you're in a hurry, it's easy to forget to apply moisturizer. And while it might seem okay to wear makeup while working out—especially if you're filming yourself—these habits can actually harm your skin and worsen issues for those prone to acne.

Dr. Garekar explained, “Washing your face twice a day is usually sufficient for most skin types. Over-washing, which means cleansing more than three times daily, can strip your skin of its natural oils. These oils are essential for protecting your skin from irritants like makeup, dirt, and bacteria. When you wash too much, you risk making your skin dry and irritated, leaving it more exposed to harmful elements.”

Regarding moisturizer, she noted, “If you have acne, keeping your skin too dry isn’t the best strategy. Skipping moisturizer can lead your skin to produce even more oil. Opt for a lightweight, hydrating moisturizer to help minimize irritation from any anti-acne treatments you might be using.”

Finally, she pointed out that wearing makeup during workouts can clog your pores. When sweat, oil, and makeup mix, it creates a perfect storm for breakouts.
