Abdominal Pain? These Symptoms Could Signal Cancer

2 days ago | 5 Views

Your abdominal discomfort may not be trivial. It could potentially signal the presence of various cancers. In a discussion with HT Lifestyle, Dr. Neeraj Goel, the director of oncology at CK Birla Hospital in Delhi, stated, “Abdominal symptoms can suggest different types of cancer, especially those impacting the gastrointestinal tract and other abdominal organs. Although these symptoms may stem from non-cancerous conditions, ongoing or intense manifestations should prompt medical evaluation to exclude malignancies.”

Abdominal symptoms and their link to cancer:

Abdominal pain: Ongoing or severe abdominal pain might indicate stomach, pancreatic, or colorectal cancer. The characteristics and location of the pain can differ based on the specific type of cancer.

Nausea and vomiting: Persistent nausea and vomiting may be linked to stomach, pancreatic, or liver cancer, especially when accompanied by additional symptoms such as jaundice or unexplained weight loss.

Weight loss: Unintentional weight loss is a frequent sign of several cancers, including those of the stomach, pancreas, and colon. It often suggests advanced disease progression.

Changes in bowel habits: Symptoms such as diarrhea, constipation, or alterations in stool consistency may indicate colorectal cancer. The presence of blood in the stool is also a critical warning sign.

Abdominal bloating: Ongoing bloating or a sensation of fullness can be experienced by individuals with ovarian or pancreatic cancer, sometimes accompanied by difficulties in eating.

Pancreatic cancer: This cancer type can lead to abdominal pain, weight loss, or jaundice, especially in its advanced stages.

Ovarian cancer: Typical symptoms encompass abdominal bloating, pelvic discomfort, and challenges with eating, often resulting in a diagnosis at a later stage due to initially mild symptoms.

Less common abdominal symptoms to be aware of:
