Research published in the Journal of Attention Disorders indicates that adults with ADHD frequently experience sleep-related difficulties.

Sleep problems from ADHD

A study conducted in the Netherlands by Mirte van der Ham and her team sought to investigate the prevalence of sleep disturbances among adults diagnosed with ADHD. The research focused on the typical sleep complaints reported by this population. Findings revealed that 60 percent of adults with ADHD encounter sleep problems, which include difficulties in falling asleep, insomnia, and restless legs syndrome—a condition characterized by an uncontrollable urge to move the legs.

According to the study, a higher percentage of women reported experiencing sleep issues compared to men, with 62 percent of women affected versus 56 percent of men. Insomnia and hypersomnia were found to be more prevalent among females, while men were more likely to experience sleep-related breathing disorders.

This study is significant as it underscores the impact of ADHD on adults, emphasizing the importance of recognizing sleep disturbances for accurate diagnosis and effective treatment of ADHD.

Individuals with ADHD may find it challenging to maintain focus, stay organized, and manage their impulses, leading to significant impairments in their daily lives.

The study further emphasizes the connection between mental health disorders, such as ADHD, and physical complications, including sleep disturbances.
