Cervical cancer ranks among the most prevalent cancers impacting millions of women both in India and globally. It is essential to recognize that this type of cancer can be prevented or effectively treated if identified in its initial stages. Cervical cancer originates in the cells of the cervix, which is the lower segment of the uterus that connects to the vagina.

In a discussion with Dr. Shubham Shamrao Bagde from Onco-Life Care Cancer Centre in Chiplun, he stated, “A primary factor contributing to cervical cancer in women is the infection by a high-risk strain of Human Papillomavirus (HPV). This virus is transmitted through sexual intercourse.”

He further explained, “Regrettably, many women fail to recognize cervical cancer in its early stages due to the absence of prominent symptoms. Therefore, it is vital for women to be informed about this cancer to significantly lower their risk.”

As per the data from global cancer observatory (Globocan 2022), cervical cancer is the ninth most common cause of cancer death worldwide.

Dr. Shubham Shamrao Bagde emphasized four essential points that every woman should be aware of regarding cervical cancer:

1. HPV is the primary cause of cervical cancer:

Research indicates that the majority of cervical cancer cases are attributed to the HPV virus, a prevalent infection transmitted through sexual contact. It is important to note that not all HPV infections result in cancer; however, persistent infections with specific strains can elevate the risk of developing cervical cancer. Vaccination with the HPV vaccine is an effective preventive measure.

2. Regular screenings are crucial for saving lives:

Many women often neglect routine check-ups or cervical cancer screenings, which are vital for early detection and can significantly improve survival rates. Regular screenings, such as Pap smears or HPV tests, are instrumental in identifying any abnormalities or irregularities in cervical cells. It is generally recommended that women begin cervical cancer screenings at the age of 21.

India accounts for the highest number of cervical cancer cases. Watch out for these warning signs

3. Early symptoms shouldn’t be ignored:

While it is accurate that the early symptoms of cervical cancer often go unnoticed, it is essential not to disregard any irregularities or atypical signs. Should you experience symptoms such as unusual bleeding, particularly following sexual intercourse, severe pelvic pain, or abnormal discharge, these may signal the presence of cervical cancer. It is crucial to seek medical advice without delay.

4. Lifestyle choices can reduce your risk:

Your everyday lifestyle decisions and habits significantly influence your likelihood of developing cervical cancer. If you are a smoker, it is advisable to quit, as smoking can compromise your immune system, making it more difficult for your body to combat HPV infections. Additionally, always engage in safe sexual practices by using condoms and consider limiting sexual partners.
