Vitamin D deficiency is a widespread concern across the globe. The Cleveland Clinic reports that approximately 1 billion individuals are affected by this deficiency, with half of the global population experiencing insufficient levels of vitamin D. While options such as supplements, sun exposure, and vitamin D-rich foods can help address this problem, it is equally crucial to recognize the symptoms associated with the deficiency.

In a video posted on Instagram on February 24, Deepsikha Jain, MSc in global public health nutrition from the UK and a national diabetes educator, discussed the key indicators of vitamin D deficiency that individuals should be aware of. She outlined eight specific signs to monitor.

Eight signs indicating potential vitamin D deficiency

Deepsikha emphasized in her Instagram clip that many individuals often overlook the symptoms of vitamin D deficiency, which can result in various health complications. She advised that if you experience any of the symptoms mentioned in her video, it is advisable to undergo a blood test and consult a healthcare professional before starting any supplementation.

Here are eight indicators of vitamin D deficiency that she highlighted:

1. Sleep disturbances

One of the initial signs of vitamin D deficiency is inadequate sleep, leading to restlessness during the night.

2. Persistent fatigue

Experiencing ongoing tiredness and fatigue throughout the day may suggest a deficiency in vitamin D.

3. Mental health issues

According to the nutritionist, individuals with low vitamin D levels may be more susceptible to depression and anxiety, as well as recurrent low moods.

4. Decreased appetite

A lack of appetite can be another symptom of vitamin D deficiency. "You may not feel hungry very often," Deepshikha noted.

5. Hair thinning and loss

Experiencing thinning hair or hair loss could indicate a vitamin D deficiency, warranting a consultation with a healthcare professional. Additionally, joint pain, knee pain, and back pain may also be present.

6. Joint and back pain

Individuals deficient in vitamin D may suffer from joint pain, knee pain, and back pain due to insufficient levels of the vitamin in their system.

7. Muscle weakness

Deepshikha explained in her Instagram reel that muscle fatigue can occur as a result of low vitamin D levels.

8. Dry and pale skin

Finally, having skin that appears pale and dry may also signal a deficiency in vitamin D, according to the nutritionist.
