To escape the sweltering summer heat, many individuals seek refuge in pools or visit beaches, allowing the refreshing water to provide essential relief. Summers devoid of pools or beaches often feel incomplete. While the cool water alleviates the heat and promotes relaxation, it can be detrimental to your hair. In fact, exposure to chlorinated pool water or saltwater can lead to significant hair damage. However, this does not mean you should forgo beach outings and pool gatherings. With appropriate precautions, you can relish your summer activities without excessive concern.

In a discussion with Lifestyle, Dr. BL Jangid, a Dermatologist and Hair Transplant Surgeon at SkinQure Clinic in Delhi, outlined specific precautionary measures.

Elaborating on the negative effects of chlorinated and saltwater, Dr. Jangid stated, “Prolonged exposure to pools or beaches can cause irreversible harm to your hair. Chlorine is added to swimming pools to keep the water free of bacteria, but this chemical can strip away the natural oils that keep hair moisturized. Likewise, saltwater from the ocean can be harsh on hair, resulting in dryness, brittleness, and increased susceptibility to damage.”

Dr. Jangid provided several tips to help prevent damage from chlorine and saltwater:

1) Wear a shower cap

Shower cap, especially for swimming pools, is important.

It is essential to adhere to this fundamental requirement when swimming. Wearing a shower cap can safeguard your hair. Additionally, applying a layer of moisturizing lotion prior to donning the cap can help mitigate the drying effects caused by salt water or chlorine exposure.

2. Apply oil before taking a dip

Before heading to pools, oil your hair.

Using a substantial amount of oil, such as coconut oil or a lightweight hair oil, before entering the pool will create a protective barrier, preventing chlorine or salt from adhering to your hair or scalp.

3. Hair wash basics

Make sure to shampoo your hair after swimming in the pool.

Before entering the water, ensure that your hair is completely saturated with tap or freshwater. Since hair is porous, pre-wetting it with regular water will reduce the amount of chlorinated pool water or saltwater it absorbs. After swimming, it is essential to shower and wash your hair right away. This practice is the most effective method to minimize or prevent the accumulation of salt or chlorine.

4. Selection of shampoo and conditioner

Pool party is all fun, but you need to take care of your hair afterwards with proper shampoo and conditioners.

If you swim frequently, it is essential to use a clarifying or chlorine-neutralizing shampoo to eliminate any buildup from chlorine, salt, or other metals. However, be cautious not to use it excessively. Additionally, avoid allowing saltwater or chlorinated hair to dry without washing, as this can increase the risk of hair becoming brittle and coarse. The same principle applies to conditioner. Following your shampoo with a deep conditioning treatment will help ensure that your hair stays smooth, soft, and shiny. A conditioner rich in protein can also be beneficial.

5. Avoid overexposure to the sun and heat

Overexposure to the sun damages your hair.

Exposure to the sun not only harms the skin but also amplifies the detrimental effects of chlorine on hair. Consequently, if you plan to be in the sun for an extended period, it is wise to wear a hat or scarf to shield your hair from UV radiation. Additionally, it is recommended to minimize the use of hair dryers, straighteners, and other styling tools that may further aggravate hair damage whenever possible.

6. Who is at more risk of hair damage from chlorine or salt water?

People who coloured their hair need to be more careful.

If you have fine hair or hair that has been colored or chemically treated, it is more susceptible to damage. It is advisable to consult a medical professional for any concerns related to scalp or hair loss.
