5-Minute Bloating Massage: Does It Really Flatten Your Belly? Doctor Weighs In
8 days ago | 5 Views
Digestive problems are a frequent issue for many people these days, often resulting in bloating. To help reduce that bloated feeling, you can try eating more fiber, drinking plenty of water, and being mindful of your food choices. But here’s something you might not know: a quick 5-minute massage can also be beneficial!
In a video posted on Instagram on April 15, Dr. Karan Rajan, an NHS surgeon, educator, and health content creator, discussed whether massage can effectively alleviate tummy bloating.
A fast 5-minute trick to relieve bloating
The video kicks off with a woman sharing her experience with a lymphatic drainage massage that helped her alleviate bloating in just five minutes. She recommends performing the massage while lying down. Start with a small amount of coconut oil and gently massage your lymph nodes, which are situated between your hip bones, by applying light pressure 20 times. She also advises using a rainbow motion and a downward sliding motion, each for 20 repetitions, to help flush out toxins from your intestines and encourage fluid movement in your lymph nodes.
She mentions, “This deep bloat routine can transform you from this to that (pointing to her change from a bloated belly to a flat one) in under five minutes, and it’s just a massage technique… I totally swear by it.”
What goes on during a massage?
Dr. Karan shared insights on the massage technique, saying, “If you're dealing with bloating and gas, this massage could really help your bowels feel better. Start by massaging the lower right side of your abdomen, close to your hip bone, which is where your ascending colon begins. Apply steady pressure as you move up the right side of your abdomen, following the route of the large intestine.”
He recommended doing this massage in the morning when your bowels are more active. It's important to always massage from right to left or in a clockwise direction. “This technique can provide relief from bloating without medication, as it helps to push your bowel movements along, similar to squeezing the last bit of toothpaste from a tube. It also mimics peristalsis, the wave-like movements of your intestines,” he explained.
Finally, Dr. Karan noted that this massage can enhance intestinal motility, leading to easier gas release and bowel movements, while reducing bloating. “It’s not an instant solution, but it can be a helpful, low-risk addition to other methods like staying hydrated, exercising, and increasing your fiber intake,” he concluded.
