Recently, Ryan Fernando, a dietician for Anushka Sharma and an Olympic Sports Nutritionist, utilized Instagram to discuss the topic of dehydration and to provide guidance on recognizing when lifestyle adjustments may be necessary.

What is dehydration?

Dehydration refers to the reduction of bodily fluids, which can result from either significant fluid loss, insufficient fluid intake, or a combination of both factors. Essentially, dehydration arises when the body expels more fluids than it absorbs, leading to an imbalance in vital electrolytes such as sodium, potassium, and chloride.

These electrolytes are essential for various physiological processes, including cellular function, nerve signaling, and muscle contractions. Any fluid that is lost from the body contains electrolytes in different amounts, meaning that fluid loss invariably results in some level of electrolyte depletion.

Ryan stated in his post, "Are you experiencing fatigue? Is your skin lacking radiance? Is your mood not quite right? These symptoms may indicate dehydration. To assess your hydration level quickly, consider these three straightforward tests."

He suggested the following three tests to determine if your body is dehydrated:

Test 1 - Skin pinch test

Pinch the skin of your hand and if your skin goes down slowly to its original state, it means it is because of dehydration.

Test 2 - Tongue check

Check your tongue in the mirror. If it is dry or there is a white coating, it means you are drinking less water.

Test 3 - Sweat and urine colour test

Experiencing reduced perspiration and noticing dark yellow urine during the summer months are indicators of dehydration.

Ryan Fernando recommends, "Upon observing these symptoms, it is advisable to consume a glass of water and ensure a daily intake of at least 8 to 10 glasses of water." Dr. Abdul Majid Khan, a Consultant Physician and Diabetologist at Olive Hospital in Hyderabad, notes that relying solely on water can heighten the risk of muscle cramps; therefore, incorporating electrolytes alongside water may alleviate muscle discomfort and cramps.

In the absence of sufficient hydration and energy restoration, the body may resort to the breakdown of muscle proteins to fulfill its energy requirements, resulting in fatigue and extended periods of illness. To mitigate the consequences of dehydration, it is crucial to prioritize the replenishment of fluids, electrolytes, and energy.
