Fitness and beauty influencer Shivani Karnica, who achieved a weight loss of 10 kg, frequently provides health advice to her followers to inspire them in cultivating a healthy lifestyle. In a recent two-part video, she discussed her journey to fitness and how she successfully shed weight while still indulging in carbohydrate-rich foods, including burgers, fries, churros, dumplings, and others.
The 80-20 rule
In the videos, Shivani discussed the impact of diet culture on our perceptions, suggesting that it leads us to think that weight loss must be characterized by strictness, lack of enjoyment, and unhappiness. She recounted her experiences with various diet trends, noting that each time she adhered to them, she ultimately faced failure. Consequently, she opted to adopt the 80-20 principle in her weight loss journey, dedicating 80 per cent of her efforts to cultivating healthy habits while allowing 20 percent for personal freedom.
Did the 20 percent hinder my progress? Certainly. Would I have achieved weight loss more rapidly without it? Likely. However, such an existence would have been monotonous. I have observed that when life resembles a form of punishment, we tend to give up, restart, give up again, and continue this cycle. This results in a lack of consistency and no tangible progress, she remarked. According to the influencer, adhering to the 80-20 principle rendered the weight loss journey more attainable, and before she knew it, she had lost 10 kilograms, all without postponing her enjoyment of life.
How to lose 10 kg
In a different segment, Shivani disclosed that she managed to lose 10 kg without dedicating excessive time to the gym or viewing exercise as a chore. “It is unrealistic to expect that anyone wakes up in the morning excited about working out; that notion is purely fictional. I even engaged a personal trainer, believing that spending money would resolve my issues. It did not,” she clarified. When conventional methods failed, she adopted two strategies: convincing herself to enjoy exercise and adhering to a philosophy of ‘no rules, no strict routines, just move.’
She varied her physical activities by incorporating dance workouts, long walks in shopping malls, swimming, rock climbing, and participating in Sunday running clubs, among others. Furthermore, she limited her gym visits to weekends and diversified her routines there as well. By continuously alternating her workouts, she avoided monotony. “Exercise ceased to be a form of punishment. I began to crave it… The only principle you need is to keep things varied and enjoyable. Before you know it, you will find yourself in your fitness journey,” she remarked.
