Girish Kohli on Writing: Letting Characters Emerge Naturally

In the filmmaking scene, visuals and performances usually steal the show, but the role of writing often gets overlooked. Girish Kohli, who wrote and directed the film Crazxy, is a strong advocate for the idea that writing is the bedrock of any film. He shares insights into his creative process and his filmmaking philosophy, highlighting the importance of letting the writing flow naturally without being bogged down by expectations for the final outcome.

Kohli points out that he avoids getting sidetracked by thoughts of who will portray the characters while writing. He believes that focusing on the actors during the writing phase can disrupt the script's authenticity and fluidity. "When I write, I let my ideas come out freely, without any barriers," he explains. This approach keeps the script raw and open, fostering creativity without being constrained by outside influences.

Reflecting on his choice to write Crazxy, Kohli saw it as a personal challenge. He aimed to craft something unique, something that diverged from traditional cinema. "The concept behind Crazxy was straightforward — to create something fresh and thrilling. I wanted to push my boundaries and explore a new way of storytelling because I’m a huge cinema enthusiast," he shares.

Kohli approaches filmmaking with a genuine respect for the art and a strong desire to learn. "I see myself as a student of cinema," he shares. By consistently watching films, absorbing their lessons, and reflecting on the works of legendary directors, Kohli emphasizes the importance of finding fresh ways to tell stories. “I engage with cinema, learn from it, and consider what our mentors have accomplished. The real question is, what can we bring to the table that’s new?” This ongoing self-reflection and quest for innovation fuel Kohli’s drive to create work that pushes boundaries for both himself and his viewers.

While Kohli values writing highly, he understands it’s just one piece of the filmmaking puzzle. "Writing is crucial, but it’s only part of the whole process," he points out. He knows that while the script serves as a foundation, filmmaking encompasses much more—actors, cinematography, sound, direction—all these components work together to enhance the narrative. He adds, "If writing were all it took, we’d just publish the script. But there’s so much more involved in bringing a story to life."

In the end, Girish Kohli’s Crazxy isn’t merely a film; it’s an experiment. It aims to explore unconventional paths in a medium that’s always changing.
