Aamir Khan Reflects on Rejecting Iconic Roles: Why He Passed on Shah Rukh and Salman's Hits

Did you know that Aamir Khan was once offered roles in Darr and Bajrangi Bhaijaan? He decided to turn them down, which ended up being a big win for Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan. Aamir shared his thoughts on these missed opportunities during the trailer launch of Aamir Khan: Cinema Ka Jadugar in Mumbai this past Sunday. The festival is set to kick off on March 14.

Aamir glances over his shoulder

At the event, he was asked about the films he wished he hadn't passed on. Aamir responded, “There was Darr that I was working on but ultimately didn’t do... It was for reasons other than creativity. Looking back, I think it turned out for the best because the vibe Yash ji was going for suited Shah Rukh much better. If I had taken it on, it would have been a different story since I had a different view on it. I don’t really regret it because the film was well-made and successful... That tone wasn’t really my style. Shah Rukh fit it better.”

Then, the actor reflected on other films he turned down when someone in the audience brought up Bajrangi Bhaijaan.

Aamir continued, “Oh right, I remember hearing the script and telling the writer that it would be a better fit for Salman Khan. That was my initial thought... I liked the script but suggested they pitch it to Salman. Instead, the writer went to Kabir Khan first... and then Kabir approached Salman. But that was my take. Even with Munna Bhai, Raju wanted me for a role... When he brought me the script, he mentioned that things had shifted and it was more of a sequel to the first film.”

Darr and Bajrangi Bhaijaan are two notable films that have made a significant impact in Indian cinema

Yash Chopra's 1993 film Darr was a game-changer for Shah Rukh Khan, who had just stepped into Bollywood a year earlier with Deewana. While he played the charming romantic lead in Deewana, in Darr, he took on the role of an obsessed anti-hero, fixated on Juhi Chawla's character, Kiran. His character had quite a few intense moments with her husband, portrayed by Sunny Deol. After the film hit theaters, Shah Rukh received a ton of acclaim for his intense performance.

Fast forward to 2015, and we have Bajrangi Bhaijaan, directed by Kabir Khan, which became a huge hit. Alongside Salman Khan, the film featured Kareena Kapoor, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, and Harshaali Malhotra. The story revolves around a kind-hearted man from Delhi who embarks on a challenging journey to reunite a lost Pakistani girl with her family.
