Aadhi Pinisetty on 'Sabdham': We Didn’t Feel Pressured to Outdo 'Eeram'

Aadhi Pinisetty on 'Sabdham': We Didn’t Feel Pressured to Outdo 'Eeram'

Aadhi Pinisetty is reuniting with director Arivazhagan after 16 years since their critically acclaimed film Eeram. It is indeed surreal that their collaboration once again centres around a horror film, titled Sabdham. Eeram has earned its place as one of the most esteemed horror films in Tamil cinema, breaking away from the typical clichés associated with the genre. Aadhi reflects on a particular incident from the filming of Eeram:

"One night, we were shooting until 3 am, capturing a scene where my character, Vasudevan, discovers Ramya lifeless in a bathtub. After completing the shoot, I returned to my apartment alone and fell into a deep sleep. Suddenly, I was awakened by loud banging on my door. To my astonishment, I found my apartment flooded with water. It was eerily reminiscent of the scene we had just filmed. When I opened the window, I saw the watchman informing me of a water leak that had caused the flooding. I realized that I had left the kitchen tap running. It was quite surreal to shoot a similar sequence and then come home to experience it in reality."

Aadhi Pinisetty Interview for Sabdham: The world of paranormal investigators was new to me

Aadhi's stance on the existence of ghosts and supernatural entities is intriguing. The actor admits that he once held such beliefs; however, after portraying a paranormal investigator in the film Sabdham and conducting research for the role, he reflects, “Having learned about the scientific methods employed in engaging with spirits and energies, I acknowledge the possibility of unseen forces. While I do not firmly believe in them, I would not be astonished if evidence were to emerge in the future.”

'The director is very keen to cater to an audience of today'

For Aadhi and Arivazhagan to collaborate once more on a horror film, the actor emphasizes that the primary motivation was the director. "He is an exceptional filmmaker, and I admire the universe he has crafted. The role of a paranormal investigator was unfamiliar to me. The character's actions are quite intriguing, particularly his method of interacting with spirits, which is approached in a very scientific manner. Upon learning about this, and considering the novelty of the world presented, I believed that the audience would experience something unique and worthy of their appreciation. This realization, upon hearing the narrative, is what compelled me to join the project Sabdham."

Aadhi further remarks that it is unjust to draw comparisons between Eeram and Sabdham, despite the same team reuniting. "Even though audiences are familiar with us, they will approach this film with a different perspective. The director is highly focused on appealing to contemporary viewers, and the visuals, sound design, and characters are distinct. We did not feel the burden of needing to surpass Eeram; we simply aimed to be authentic."

Shooting horror films may not evoke the same level of fear as portrayed on screen; rather, it presents a unique challenge as actors must convincingly simulate the absence of a presence. Aadhi emphasizes that it is the responsibility of actors to engage in this task, regardless of its fictional nature. “We strive to be as authentic as possible. It’s essentially the same scenario, just with one character missing. It can be somewhat tricky and amusing, but once you start, you find your rhythm.”

One key aspect Aadhi seeks in narratives is the sincerity of the storytelling. “When there is genuine honesty in the way stories are conveyed, that is where my belief in them lies. I prioritize that element. Beyond that, the outcome is beyond our influence.”

Aadhi, who has confirmed a sequel to his 2017 film Maragadha Naanayam, expresses that returning to this world is a seamless process, even after several years. “It’s not solely my effort; there is a dedicated team behind it. As the narration unfolds, we grasp the universe the director aims to recreate, akin to the first instalment. It becomes easier since it is a continuation. The challenge lies in determining how to present something distinct or, as I would say, more engaging.”

With a partner who is also an actor, Aadhi shares that he often engages in discussions with his wife, Nikki Galrani. “I value their insights, as it is crucial and necessary. However, my decisions ultimately remain my own.”

Aadhi notes that action intertwined with emotion is his preferred genre, and he aspires to explore this aspect further in his career. “Merely action does not appeal to me. I require profound emotions to complement it, and I am eagerly awaiting a script that embodies that.”
