Zeenat Aman on working with Amitabh Bachchan in Pukar

Reflecting on her experience working with Amitabh Bachchan in Pukar, Zeenat noted that the song was filmed on the picturesque beaches of Goa. She recalled the directive she received for the song, which was simply to look attractive. Describing her appearance in the song, Zeenat Aman mentioned that she wore a revealing white outfit that showcased her midriff while playfully rolling in the surf, despite not knowing how to swim. She humorously added that Amitabh "moved around me like an enthusiastic bird of paradise." Zeenat also highlighted that this was Amitabh's first shoot following his near-fatal accident during the filming of Coolie in 1982.

In her post accompanying the video, Zeenat candidly expressed, "Uff.. I’ll be honest. This is somewhat of a self-indulgent post inspired by the summer heat. It’s just so incredibly hot! I refer to the weather, of course. However, I won’t shy away from admitting that the chemistry between Mr. Bachchan and me in those evocative lyrics is quite steamy as well. Working on Ramesh Behl’s Pukar was a delightful experience. The film's anti-colonial themes, outstanding cast, and memorable songs were what attracted me to the script."

Zeenat was told to 'look pretty'

Reflecting on her experience filming the song, Zeenat remarked, "In the early 1980s, Goa was serene, picturesque, and sparsely populated. The song 'Samundar Mein Naha Ke' was filmed on a deserted beach, making it a relaxed experience for me! I had no lip-syncing to perform and minimal choreography to master. The directive was straightforward: just look beautiful! Dressed in a revealing white outfit that showcased my midriff, I found myself rolling in the surf while Mr. Bachchan danced around me like a vibrant bird of paradise," she recounted.

Zeenat also revealed her inability to swim, despite being "entangled in the waves." "My otherwise fluid performance was challenged by one minor detail—I can't swim! I had to overcome a significant amount of anxiety (and seawater) while filming those scenes of me moving in the surf! Even though I took a few spills in the waves and ended up with sand in some uncomfortable spots, I believed I convincingly portrayed a jal pari (mermaid). Whether it's romantic or platonic, share this post with someone who owes you a beach vacation this summer!" she added.

Regarding Amitabh's return to work after his accident, Zeenat mentioned, "Here's an interesting fact: This was Mr. Bachchan's first shoot following the life-threatening accident he experienced on the set of 'Coolie' in 1982. By that time, Bachchan's popularity was firmly established in the country, and the entire nation held its breath until he recovered. Therefore, the atmosphere on set was particularly uplifting during the filming of this movie," she concluded.
