Zahan Kapoor: Breaking Nepotism Stereotypes with a Unique Upbringing
2 months ago | 5 Views
Zahan Kapoor has demonstrated his talent through only two screen projects. Following a highly praised debut in Hansal Mehta's film Faraz, the actor garnered further acclaim for his role in Vikramaditya Motwane's series Black Warrant. As the series continues to receive positive reviews, Zahan shares insights about his journey with HT.
Zahan is the offspring of actor Kunal Kapoor and theatre figure Sheena Sippy. His paternal grandfather, Shashi Kapoor, is regarded as one of the most significant stars in the history of Bollywood, while his maternal grandfather is the renowned filmmaker Ramesh Sippy. However, he does not encounter accusations of 'nepotism' like many other children of celebrities, including his cousins from the Kapoor lineage. When questioned about this distinction, Zahan chuckles and remarks, "I don't know. That's not for me to assess or judge."
Zahan on growing up outside the industry ‘bubble’
The actor states, "What I can share is the truth: I have been quite fortunate to have a unique upbringing. My parents were both creative individuals, albeit somewhat distanced from the industry. By the time I was born, my grandfather had already retired. Consequently, I did not grow up immersed in the industry environment. This allowed me the privilege of experiencing a truly ordinary and normal life. I became aware of these aspects during my teenage years."
Zahan elaborates that his upbringing facilitated a natural progression into acting, initially through theatre and subsequently through film. "Additionally, I gained practical experience on the job. I began working in production at a young age, starting with theatre. My interest in acting developed organically; it was not influenced by external factors. I had sufficient distance from the industry to make my own choices," the actor concludes.
On accidental and incidental entry into acting
Zahan characterizes his entry into the film industry as 'accidental,' suggesting that this natural and unforced approach may resonate with audiences. He elaborates, stating, "The choices I have made have been largely incidental and unplanned. I have not sought to manipulate the process. It has unfolded through the influence of casting directors and sheer happenstance. This journey has been entirely organic, and I am thankful for that. There has been no strategic calculation involved. Perhaps, it is this authenticity and vitality that people appreciate."
Zahan's journey into acting commenced over a decade ago with theatre. "It has been a gradual process, a slow burn, but I find great satisfaction in that. It provides me the opportunity to explore deeply," he remarks.
About Black Warrant
In the series Black Warrant, Zahan portrays the character Sunil Gupta, who reflects on his formative years as a deputy jailer at Tihar Jail during the 1980s. This adaptation is inspired by the 2019 nonfiction work Black Warrant: Confessions of a Tihar Jailer, authored by Sunil Gupta and Sunetra Choudhury. The cast also includes Rahul Bhat, Paramvir Singh Cheema, Anurag Thakur, and Sidhant Gupta. The series is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
