The KGF films elevated Yash from a regional celebrity to a widely recognized figure throughout India. These two films, which together amassed over ₹1500 crore, rank among the highest-grossing Kannada films in history. This remarkable success solidified Yash's status as one of India's leading stars. However, his ascent to this prominent position was fraught with challenges. Originating as the son of a modest bus driver, Yash embarked on a lengthy journey toward success.

How Yash worked as a tea-seller, earned ₹50 per day

At the age of 16, Yash persuaded his parents to allow him to leave home in pursuit of his dream in cinema. He secured a position as an assistant director for a Kannada film. However, just two days after arriving in Bangalore, the project was unexpectedly cancelled. “I had run away from home. Upon my arrival in Bengaluru, I felt a wave of fear wash over me; it was such a vast and daunting city. Nevertheless, I have always been a confident individual. I was not afraid of facing challenges. When I arrived in Bengaluru, I had merely ₹300 in my possession. I understood that if I returned home, my parents would never permit me to come back here,” the actor recounted.

With only ₹300 to his name, Yash became a member of the Benaka Drama Troupe, taking on the role of a backstage assistant to support himself. During this time, the young man performed various tasks, such as serving tea and earning ₹50 each day. While refining his skills in theatre, Yash also enrolled in college.

The beginning of an acting career

He ultimately received his breakthrough in acting through the television series Nanda Gokula, where he encountered his future spouse, Radhika Pandit. In 2007, Yash made his film debut with a supporting role in Jambada Hudugi, subsequently taking on the lead role in Rocky (2008). He achieved significant success as a leading actor with the romantic comedy Modalasala. The following year, he solidified his status as a reliable star with the success of Karnataka. In the ensuing years, he delivered several hits, including Moggina Manasu, Drama, Googly, Mr. and Mrs. Ramachari, and Masterpiece.

KGF and stardom

In 2018, Yash featured in KGF: Chapter 1, which shattered all box office records by grossing ₹250 crore, making it the highest-grossing Kannada film in history. This record remained unbroken for four years until KGF: Chapter 2 surpassed it with an astonishing collection of ₹1250 crore. The film continues to be recognized as one of the highest-grossing Indian films of all time and is the sole Kannada film to exceed ₹1000 crore in earnings.

The national fame that KGF brought to Yash enabled him to expand his career beyond Kannada cinema. He was cast in the role of Ravana in Nitesh Tiwari's Ramayana, which features Ranbir Kapoor and Sai Pallavi and is reported to be the most expensive Indian film currently in production. Yash is also serving as a co-producer for this project and, according to reports, has received ₹200 crore for his participation. This marks a remarkable transformation for an individual who once managed to live on just ₹50 a day.
