Why Katy Perry Left 'American Idol': A 'Suffocating' Experience and a Return to Music

Katy Perry, who departed from “American Idol” in February 2024 to focus on her music career, is reportedly not considering a return due to the show's demanding schedule. The singer is set to launch her global tour with Lifetimes in April.
On Monday, Perry took part in Blue Origin's groundbreaking all-female space mission alongside Lauren Sánchez and Gayle King. The “Dark Horse” artist shared that it had always been her dream to travel to space. Upon her return to Earth, she kissed the ground, joyfully celebrating this significant achievement.
Sources speaking to The US Sun indicate that the American singer has no intention of rejoining the show. They explained that the rigorous demands of the program conflicted with her creative pursuits and long-term goals.
Perry publicly announced her decision during an appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” where she expressed her desire to prioritize her music career.
“I think this will probably be my last season for Idol,” she stated to Kimmel. “I have a deep affection for [American] Idol; it has connected me with the heart of America. However, I need to reconnect with my rhythm. I cherish the show, but I want to explore the world and potentially create new music.”

Country music artist Carrie Underwood has taken over as the new judge, replacing Perry. However, sources indicate that Perry has not been following the current season.
“Katy doesn't even watch the show, so she hasn't seen Carrie,” the insider revealed.
“The experience was somewhat stifling due to the obligations of her Disney contract, which required extensive filming throughout the year and necessitated reporting to individuals she typically would not have to,” the source shared with The Sun.
The pop star is fully embracing her musical resurgence, marked by the release of her new album “143” and her forthcoming Lifetime tour, which will be her first international concert series since the Witness tour in 2017.
With a total of 84 performances planned across multiple continents, the tour is set to kick off in Mexico City on April 23, 2025, and will conclude in Abu Dhabi on December 7, 2025.
