Kuch Kuch Hota Hai has become a beloved classic. When Shah Rukh Khan opened his arms and sang, 'Tum paas aaye, yun muskuraye,' it became the love anthem for a whole generation. The magic of this song can be credited to lyricist Sameer Anjaan, whose heartfelt and straightforward lyrics resonated with us back then and still do today. However, Sameer had a tough task ahead of him, stepping in for the iconic poet Javed Akhtar.

Sameer shared that Javed Sahab turned down the opportunity to write for Karan Johar's first film due to its 'vulgar' title. That's when Sameer was brought on board to infuse a youthful and fresh energy into the project. In a recent chat with Lallantop, the lyricist discussed his experience and mentioned that he didn’t see the title as an issue.

Javed Akhtar requested Karan Johar to modify the title

In a straightforward conversation, Sameer shared, "Javed sahab was initially set to write the songs for this film. But he decided to leave because he wasn't fond of the film's title. He told Karan Johar that he would only come on board if the title was changed, as he appreciated the story but really disliked the title."

An audience member inquired about Javed Akhtar's reaction when he expressed that the title had a double meaning. Sameer responded, "I never saw anything vulgar in it. I was young at the time, and it didn’t strike me as inappropriate. I later learned that Javed Sahab thought, ‘Is ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ really a suitable title?’ When I sat down to write, I was immersed in the feelings of love, thinking about what it means to experience love—‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ is what happens when you’re in love."

He continued, "I figured that if the director chose this title, he must have had a good reason and a story behind it."

Karan was looking for Sameer's unique flair

Javed Sahab definitely influenced Sameer. When Sameer started writing, he aimed to impress Karan Johar by incorporating Javed Akhtar's poetic style. However, Karan quickly stepped in, urging him to stick to his own unique style, which is known for its simplicity and freshness.

“When I was asked to write the songs, I thought since this film was initially with Javed Sahab, I should throw in some shayari to wow Karan. But as soon as I shared a paragraph, he got really upset; it was a total surprise,” he recalled.

He added, “Karan told me he brought me on board because I’m young and this is a story about college students. He wanted my straightforward style, nothing fancy. He wasn’t interested in shayari at all. When I tried again, I mentioned that it felt too simple and wondered if people would like it. Karan was really confident and reassured me not to worry. He knew exactly what he wanted, and there was no need to overthink it.”
