The premiere of The Last of Us Season 2 on April 13 quickly introduced a host of new characters and heightened tensions. One of the most notable newcomers is Joel's unexpected therapist, Gail, portrayed by the renowned comedy actress Catherine O’Hara. However, this subplot transcends a typical therapy narrative.
In a startling moment during their initial session, Gail accuses Joel with a chilling statement: “You killed Eugene … I hate you for it.” This revelation brings a mysterious character named Eugene into focus—who is he, and what significance does he hold?
Who is Eugene in The Last of Us Part II video game?
In the context of The Last of Us Part II video game, Eugene's character is not prominently featured until the sequel, which was released in 2020. In the game, he is depicted as a friend of Tommy, Joel's brother, and is characterized as a former Firefly who has transitioned to a patrolman residing in Jackson, Wyoming. Living alone after leaving his wife Claire and daughter to join a rebellion, Eugene forms a friendship with Dina, who mentions that he taught her about electronics. The series hints that he passed away in 2038 due to a stroke at the age of 73, as reported by Today.com.
Why is Eugene an important character?
Season 2 significantly enhances Eugene's character, transforming him from a mere mention into a well-developed individual, similar to the treatment of Bill and Frank in the highly regarded “Long, Long Time” episode. The first reference to Eugene occurs during Joel's visit to Gail's therapy session. While Joel pays for the session, Gail notes that Eugene could cultivate it at any time of the year, adding, “It’s my first birthday without my husband in 41 years.”
Given that Season 2 takes place five years after the events of Season 1, it suggests that Joel killed Eugene at some point off-screen, a moment not yet witnessed by the audience.
During the therapy session, Gail confronts Joel, stating, “You shot and killed my husband. You killed Eugene. I resent you for it. No, perhaps I feel even more than that. I hate you for it. I hate you for it. And yes, I understand you had no choice. I know that. I know I should forgive you. I’ve tried, but I can’t. It’s the way you did it. Seeing your face in our home fills me with such rage.”
Throughout this new season, Eugene's character appears to be pivotal, as his anticipated death is likely to have significant implications for Joel and Ellie’s relationship. Neil Druckmann, co-creator of The Last of Us, shared with Newsweek, “With a character like Eugene, we aimed to explore how his story would deepen Joel and Ellie’s relationship, enrich the town of Jackson, and expand on the overarching theme of love and the lengths to which it can drive individuals.”
