When Jaya Speaks Bengali: Amitabh's Comedic Struggle to Keep Up

Amitabh Bachchan frequently shares entertaining stories and life lessons with the participants of his program, Kaun Banega Crorepati. In this week's episode, Amitabh will discuss how he feigns comprehension when his wife, Jaya Bachchan, converses in Bengali.
How Amitabh Bachchan learnt to speak Bengali
Viewers will be introduced to Saurav Choudhary, hailing from Kolkata, West Bengal. Saurav serves as a Senior Account Assistant at a Chartered Accountant Firm. During the program, Amitabh Bachchan reminisces about his office's location directly opposite the Bengal Chamber of Commerce in Dalhousie, where Bengali language classes were available. The firm allocated ₹3000 for employees to learn Bengali, enabling them to communicate effectively with the staff, contingent upon passing an examination after three months. At that time, Mr. Bachchan's salary was merely ₹500, leaving him with ₹150 after covering his expenses. The ₹3000 designated for the Bengali course was exhausted within three days; however, to compensate for the absence of formal instruction, he practised the language with two friends after work hours. When the day of the examination arrived, Mr Bachchan achieved success.

He also reminisces about a recent amusing episode involving his wife, Jaya Bachchan, which necessitated his use of Bengali. However, he admits that his fluency in the language has diminished, leading to a communication challenge. He explained, “When guests are present and a private conversation is needed, Jaya always resorts to Bengali, while I feign comprehension, though I truly do not. Recently, while she was filming in Goa, I received a phone call from her. Typically, we communicate via text, but this time she called, which made me anxious. My heart races when she calls, as I am uncertain of what to expect.”
He continued, “I hesitated before answering, unaware of the situation. She began speaking in Bengali due to the presence of others, and I was completely lost. I kept responding with 'ha ha,' but eventually admitted that I did not understand her. Thus, I often find myself in such predicaments. If you were to ask me to converse in Bengali today, I would struggle. I only know a couple of phrases: Besi jane na, ektu ektu jaane (I don't know much, very little I can understand).”
Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan were married in 1973 and have now celebrated 51 years together.
